Friend's ride broke down. He was driving waiting to turn. Heard some clanking sound under the hood. He said steering started to become hard. Engine temp gauge rose to the H. Stopped at the road side. Coolant was topped up a few days ago.. Called a m8, came to charge his battery but when i tried to drive it, steering was still equally hard. Needed to use thrice the strength to turn the wheel. After using jumper cables to charge the battery, no more clanking sound, but steering was still hard. had abit of brakes problem as well.

btw he drives this

Lol, QQ.

Sounds like something has snapped in the steering well, or he might not have oiled the car up, idk.

Even though it seems pretty obvious: Did you check the power steering fluid? You'll probably have to look under the car to find out what that clanking was.

mmm checked the power steering fluid as well. I am not mechanic but the liquid should be quite dark right? Looked at the level also, seems to be fine. Whats worst was the engine overheating even though the coolant was filled.

sounds like the thermostat might be bad in the radiator... the engine over heats and the motor cuts off... the power steering depends on the motor running...

It has an engine?

Could it be as simple as a broken belt that drives the waterpump, power steering pump as well as the charger?

Its because he has taken that shopping trolley out of the car park and now it refuses to move.  You might need a bottle of power steering hydralic fluid.  Just walk into any car parts shop and ask.

"Hi I'd like a bottle of power steering fluid for my orange shopping trolley car"  To me I'd swap as that seems like a good deal to me.

That car is hidieous and what makes it worse? The colour helps it stand out from the crowd.

Put young offenders in these cars, blast the bass and drive around town for all their mates to see and laugh at them, that'll stop em repeat offending.

Check your vacuum pump too. My guess if it's a clunk that you heard, maybe a belt snapped and struck something, and so whatever it was driving is dead. (pardon the pun)
My suspicion is that the belt driving the vacuum pump for the steering fluid is kaputt. That also means that no coolant  will be going to your engine, no matter how much is in the tank (in most cases both pumps are on the same belt)

If steering goes really hard then the power steering pump is fucked. If engine temp rises then it's teh rad

hmm most cars use ATF which is dark red (depends on type) although can be other colours

not neccesarily

dont know what your talking about? :S  thermostat is in the thermostat housing not the radiator

DonFck, TSI, and Jamiet are on the ball for this one.   but you never know it might be something else, maybe the power steering pump is seized up or the water pump is seized up, which would cause the belt to skip and could cause a clonking sound. which would also make the alternator not work properly and everything else connnected to it

make sure you tell him to get both belts (or all 3 if it has 3) replaced because if the timing belt snaps it can bend the valves and cost lots of money to fix

The real question is:

Have you actually had a mechanic look at it? I think some RL help would be slightly more effective than a forum with vague information?

The problem could be a few different issues combined. I would check belts first.

Do you have a picture of the engine?
Some cars have a fan that runs off the power steering pump pulley. If the PS pump belt went out and the radiator fan runs off the PS pump than that would explain the hotter temps. Who knows how this car is set up.

A PS pump, water pump, alternator, etc can go bad and cause more drag on the engine. A small engine will feel it more than a larger engine. Additional drag could cause the vehicle to get hotter.

Hotter temps are usually the result of:
-damaged/loose belt
-radiator clog, damage, lack of coolant
-water pump problem
-timing/ignition system incorrect
-fan clutch (if belt driven) bad
-electric fan motor damaged, wiring problem/connection or fan thermostat bad
-clogged catalytic converter
-etc... there can be a lot of things that cause a car to get hotter

With the car sitting still, key on, engine off, can you turn the steering wheel?
If you jerk the wheel kind of fast do you get a clunk sound?
Try it with the engine running.
Jack up the car and grab the tire. Try to shake it or jerk it side to side and see if you get a clunk.

Are there any leaks?

Picture of the engine would be helpful to understand the setup.
