Should i get a laptop or wait?

Current specs:

Intel core 2 duo 6400 @ 2.13GHz
2 gigs of ram
windows xp
GeForce 7900 gt
LG 20.1" screen

So next september I'll be heading off to university, and i'll need a laptop. questions:

1. Is there anything coming out that i should wait for, or should i go for it now?
2. If now, what laptop should i get?
3. xp or vista?

I want it to be pretty '1337' so i can play my games on them, etc.

Quick question, but why would you actually need a laptop?

I thought i might, but:

Pen+Paper
Uni file server
a bazillion student PC rooms

=

No need to spend £600

Small hourglass island
Always raining and foggy
Use an umbrella

a bazillion student PC rooms

No need to spend £600

i don't need one, but I'd much rather prefer one to a pc, for in class and i like the portability

You current PC is better than 95% of laptops so I personally don't see a reason to get one now.

laptop idea is nice, but i've already seen a few kids laptops either dying or bsoding mid-lecture.

and them being too cool, they didnt bring a pencil+pad for backup.

Shame on them.

yeah i know what you mean i guess... my brother's friend has already had to get like 4 replacements for his laptop lol. I still would like one for around the house and vacation on top of school.

Personally I'd use the desktop for games and just buy a low end laptop for class, and mobility. A laptop with any kind of battery life and anywhere neear a reasonable price probably won't be good for games. And if and when you break, loose, or get you laptop stolen you're not out nearly as much $$$$

Too much money. Wait till the back to school sales in August/Sept or whenever Uni starts. Like most people said, unless you spend like $3000 on a laptop, it won't be much good for gaming so take your desktop with you.

battery life is less than 3 hours while idle unless you find a 9 or 12 cell battery it wouldn't be worth it.

try hp, but i suggest waiting until summer. prices will go down.

I was in your position last year.

I brought my desktop, got an eee pc and bought a 24 inch monitor so I could bring my PS3 down with me with the money I saved.

You really don't need a laptop for most classes, and if you end up needing one, an eee pc will do you just fine.

I really wanted a nice Asus gaming laptop, and I'm so happy I didn't get one, because it would have been a huge waste of money. Seriously
