Which do you prefer?

I've personally bought nothing but Seagate. Their SATA drives have always been really cheap (usually the cheapest) and get the highest review scores.

Had a Maxtor one time and it was a POS. Loud and slow.

Have had Western Digitals and Maxtors in the past - the WD's I've had were better than the Maxtors I've had, but neither even touch my current favourite HDD brand - Hitachi - Deskstars to be precise.

I really don't care, although I'm done with Maxtors. Running one Seagate, one WD and one Samsung atm, all seem fairly good.

Samsung, WD and Seagate are the best consumer-level brands.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

That's what's their problem.

I hear of Maxtor's dying more than any other hard drive brand. Maxtor sucks, get over it.

I'm a Seagate fan, personally. They usually are cheaper than the WD equivalent, and usually with more cache too. I had one Seagate 250GB that got messed up in a thunderstorm (partition tables got fuckz0red, half the drive completely disappeared into oblivion) and I sent it back for warranty, which took about 2 weeks and was completely hassle free. Awesome.

I've used WD in the past too, and I like them also.

For internal SATA drives (it's different when you look at SCSI drives, but fairly similar for PATA):

Samsung and Western Digital (who make shitty unreliable externals btw - not the drives, but the enclosures are rubbish) are the most reliable brands of drives without a shadow of a doubt.

Maxtor are worst, in every conceivable way. Seagate are often unreliable and flakey (but they are best of the rest, and can perform pretty damn well). Hitachi, whilst they have improved from the old days of the IBM Deathstars, are still fairly shoddy.

One of my Samsung F1s is a bit loud now, but to be honest I'm surprised it still works after I dropped it on a hard wood floor.

i've had 3 seagates over the years. two 250gb IDE drives. one of them ended up dying after about a couple years or so, but it gabe me signs in advance so i was able to back up my data. the rma from seagate was very smooth. the replacement has been just fine.

i also got a 160gb sata wd about a year ago. no problems with that.

Seagate has that 5 year warranty and their customer service seems to be top notch (backed up from what you guys have been saying about them).

I don't know if WD or Samsung are actually better. I'd rate all 3 the same?

Samsung ≥ WD > Seagate >>>>>>>>>>>>> Maxtor > Hitachi
is my ranking. Maybe Maxtor (which are Seagates now) and Hitachi improved their quality now, but I still don't trust them after the horror stories of the '90s and early '00s

Also Maxtor fans write like this:

In the office where I work (IT) we have had a significantly higher failure rate for WD than Seagate, but these two are also the only brands we use.

What kind of drives were that? WD had a bad era around 2000-2002
