I've always been interested in firearms.  When I was in elementary school I had plastic toy guns; middle school was cap and BB guns; high school was paintball and airsoft.  Now I'm 19 and in college and I want to go to the next level- a hunting rifle.  I've checked out my local laws and they are very lenient.  No permits needed, no licenses, nothing.  All you need to do is be 18 and give he people money.  So, I'm looking around and am not sure what to get.  What's a good price($), caliber, and brand.  I know a bunch of you guys are gun nuts, so help me out here .

Hunting for deer?

30-06.

it's not a hot new wildcat, but it's been knocking deer down for a century.

Do you have any experience with firearms?

Only experience is the boy scout rifle badge

Thats it for real firearm experience, but I've had just about everyother type of 'gun' so I know most of the safety precautions with firing and such.  Plus I'm not a moron (or at least thats what the voices tell me )

So is this just for hunting?  or do you want to learn how to shoot?  What's your goal?

Currently I just want to go out shooting with the gf's father and some friends, ya know tin cans and such.  Later on, however, when I actually have some time and money on my hands, I would like to get into hunting.

Many deer frolicking around New Hampshire?

lol

Make sure the rifle you buy comes with a good scope, better than buying rifle + scope separately imo.

then go to the local pawn shop and pick up a used .22.  You don't need a hunting round for tin cans, unless you're shooting them from 300 yards.

For pistols, there are some nice .22 or 9mm is a good start.

The price difference shouldn't be too great, and you can have a backup scope you can use for your less competition "i just wanna shoot stuff" type of hunting trips.

Buy a better scope by all means, but a cheap one has its merits.

Checking with local dealers would give you a good idea of what the general populace prefers.  If you are heavy wooded it may be a .30-30.  The '06 is an excellent case where the .270 is same basic case with near same power but less recoil, often important for a newer shooter.

Don't forget a scope, 2.5x, 4x - see thru mounts to retain iron sight ability.  Ammo varies greatly, again, local preference may prevail.

Bolt actions for accuracy, SA for faster follow up shots if required.

Forums can't do the topic justice, just provide a few ideas to point you in the right direction.

as a paper weight.

most high end optics will cost more than the firearm they are being mounted on.
