School Tossing out old computers.

Basically schools getting rid of a bunch of computers.
Specs:

P4 2.4GHz
512mb DDR 533mhz
40GB IDE HDD
Some have 6600GT's

Would it be worth getting any of these? I was thinking of trying to make one completely silent for use as a media PC.
I might have to pay a bit of money for them, $50 at most, because I think they might sell some to other schools.

TLDR: Old school computers as a silent Media PC?

Also, good quiet heatsink, I will probably be replacing the case too.

Grab the ram and hdd's if you can.

Spare ram and hard discs are always useful.

They'll work great in server roles, as a SD HTPC and as a glorified jukebox. For HD content the CPU is too weak.

Dude, I want one. I have 1G ddr ram, and I'd just take the whole rest of the mobo with a 6600. You can take whatever you'd like? currently I have a geforce 5700 fx (PCI - I need a pci-e mobo.) with some shitty stock 1.79 ghz intel. plus i could use another drive. 60 gb with ~4 free.

I would instantly jump on the train and get one, without even a second thought.

Then I'd go out and get 2 500GB HD's to put in a RAID1, and make me a monster media server/Torrent downloader.

Then maybe, someday I'll go get a big washing machine sized rackmount for it and suspend the harddrive with bungee cords.

My school is running C2D Conroes @ 3Ghz with 3GB of RAM, 80GB HDDs, 19" HP Monitors and 7900GS

For $50 I would get at least one (maybe try negotiating?). Would make a good entertainment thing so long as you can go without watching HD movies.
