And this is the weirdest frigging thing I have ever used.

First impressions:
- Keys are spaced too far apart
- The Enter key on the keyboard is ridiculously small and far away on the German keyboard (maybe it's the same on the English?)
- I hate that I cannot expand Safari to fill the entire desktop and I cannot find the Fullscreen function
- I do like the OSX GUI overall, though, it is intuitive
- It's also VERY different from XP, before I knew where everything in XP is - here I have to hunt for it, but that can change with time
- I had to call my friend to tell me how to connect to the Internet using her 3G modem, apparently you go to the top corner and click this little telephone - don't like that. In the XP distro of the modem's software there is a connect button right there - STOP HIDING SHIT FROM ME, JOBS!!!
- AND HOW THE FUCK DO I OPEN A NEW TAB?! I had to do the Apple button plus a mouse click just to get the tab bar to appear. Hunted through the preferences menu and I couldn't find shit to show a tab bar or anything like in Firefox. If I ever get a Mac, that's the first change - ditching Safari and getting Firefox!
- I do like the text input, it's very crisp-looking typing here into this text box. But I know that can be changed in FF, too. No biggy.
- The screen is nice and rich, very good quality.
- I HATE SAFARI!!!!! (but at least YouTube works)

New tab in firefox... Command + T

What bottom three left keys? I'm on a Macbook. I press the CRTL, ALT and Command key and 8 and the screen goes to a negative.

And I don't have Firefox on this computer. I am not making any changes to it, either. Though I did make one accidental. There was this Floola thing in the Mac HD window and I clicked the Eject button next to it and it disappeared and I don't know how to make it go back.

- I also don't like having to hit the Command + Q command to actually quit the program. If I click the close button, CLOSE IT! Don't just minimize it or leave it sitting in system memory. Bad Steve, BAD!

What Mac are you using?

1. Keyboard is fine. I like it better.
2. The one close to the spacebar? My return key also has enter written on it, just about the word return.
3. It's sexyshit.
4. Once you know it, it's VERY easy.
5. No idea about the modem thing, but connecting to the internet has been shit loads easier than the other (Windows) computers here at home.
6. Same with Firefox. Command (apple button) + T

EDIT: This is based on my MacBook Pro.

EDIT 2: Dude, with Safari... press File along the top, and the shortcuts should be listed next to the function. There you'll see the "New Tab". You can also resize the window by grabbing the bottom right hand corner, and dragging.

Given that Mac's are designed for idiots by idiots, you clearly should not be allowed near a computer again if you can't use one.

Maybe you can also tell me why the hell there are ONLY TWO USB ports. The Macbook Air only has one, and the Macbook Pro STILL only has TWO. Come on ... my EEE PC has THREE.

I also hate the case construction. The DVD drive is on the right, and all the ports are on the left. I WANT A MIX!!!! I want ports on both sides or on the back or front. JUST NOT ALL ON ONE SIDE!!!

And why is there NO card reader? You pay this much for a damned notebook and there is no card reader. My EEE at least has a card reader for SD cards. The new Macbooks don't even have card readers. Ugh.

Like I said, overall, I like it. But there are enough tiny design quirks that I do not like. The new Macbooks don't even have card readers. Oh, and the video output ... why does it have to be some proprietary bullshit? CONFORM TO THE FUCKING INDUSTRY, JOBS! I hate how the whole Apple mindset to the design is: We must be different. Good. Be different. But take some good ideas from the industry and COPY THEM like everyone else does. No shame in copying a good idea.

Then the accessory market for an Apple is overpriced. Sorry, but I hate that. Apple Tax does exist and you get stiffed with it the moment you want your Mac to communicate with a Windows or Linux computer.

BTW - I am on a previous generation Macbook. Just a normal, plain Jane Macbook.

The edges .... does the Apple factory not have a single sander in the entire building? These edges are rather sharp. I could see that being a problem if I was at a desk instead of sitting in bed.

No idea about the USB ports. That shits me too, cause I'll often have my camera connected to the MBP, and then maybe my iPod on the other one. For 3 USB ports, I would need the larger 17" MBookPro.

Can't comment on the case construction. One of my good friends has an old white MacBook. I suspect it's the same kind as yours... I shall check it out.

I've got a slot for... some car reader thing to be put into the side of the MBP? Fuck, I would never use it.. Just download my photos straight from the camera/shoot tethered.

The video output also annoys me. Meh, but it came with an adaptor so no biggie. I mainly use the laptop's DVI out to connect to projectors for teaching at cadets. The Apple Remote is VERY good when used with PowerPoint.

Fuck apple accessories. Agreed - too expensive.

As for the other post, I'm not sure about the edges on the old MacBooks, but the edges on my (old) MBook Pro are all some kinda rubber strip, about 2mm wide. I'm curious again, so I'll check my friends MacBook and see what you are taking about.

Apparently it saves battery life.

lol @ weird. Think of the Command Key as a Windows control key. Command + T / N / W etc will do all of those functions. The first thing I did when I got my MacBook was install Firefox. Add-ons such as adblock were just essential to me, and I like the feel of Firefox. Although visually they are pretty similar. FF FTW!

I prefer having all the ports on one side. It's a lot handier for me, at least - and makes it look a lot cleaner too. With regards to the card reader ... I'm in the same boat. I'd have loved to have seen even just an SD card slot, which could elegantly fit in almost anywhere. It's a real shame that they don't have it as they are aiming their computers to a media industry. With regards to case instruction, I think you wrote you are using the previous gen. (white/black) MacBooks? They have issues. The outer shell was put on too tight and bulging and cracks happen - a serios (yes, serios) problem. Thankfully, that's been rectified on these new sexy aluminum MBs.

Yea, I figured that the Command key acted like the Ctrl key in Windows. But it was still annoying that the Ctrl key still existed on a Mac keyboard ... I know Jobs did it just to confuse the shit out of me.

Still, as an OS, OSX is rather nice. But I'll be holding out for the awesomeness that will be Windows 7. Touch screens, baby!!!

either/or

But I think if you build it yourself, Apple refuses to give you support with OSX. Something about breaking the EULA.

I do remember a friend outlining how he built himself a Mac and the price for a Psystar Open Mac (not the Pro) with the best graphics, upgraded CPU and larger HDD, the costs ended up about the same and the performance on the Psystar was a bit better.

Apple won't give you any support with a Psystar either ...

I think they will. Psystar and Apple have been to court over it.

and the courts haven't come to a decision yet. There is no way apple will give up the hardware sales

Hmm what?

He's right. Totally right. Although woe betide you if you actually want to do anything complicated on a Mac instead of just using it for basic home use. Unless of course you enjoy faffing about with Kerberos ticketing and Apache proxy conflicts (which happen a LOT - most commonly when anyone turns on parental controls). Forget about integrating smoothly onto active directory networks as well, samba support on Macs is horrific. There are so many horrific and fundamental flaws in the OS and the hardware is shockingly bad. Certainly of lower quality than comparable PC hardware and double the price. The systems run hot (very hot, often dangerously so - 70-80C at stock clocks is awful), the DOA rate for Apple components is insanely high (not like the old days when Apple's components were built in the US or Canada - now that they all come China they are shit), repairs are prohibitively expensive and the parts Apple supply for repairs are all refurbed (not even new parts, and you can still end up paying upto around £200 for an optical drive).
