I have a 17" Laptop. I use it to play games. I never bring it anywhere because it's heavy as hell with maybe 45 minutes of battery life. I also happen to own a small, portable laptop for school/business uses.

So, I have 3 questions:

1) Is it possible to put the parts inside the laptop into a desktop case with minimum purchases required?

2) Will any noticeable performance be gained since it won't be in such a small case, i.e. a lot less heat

3) Can I sell the empty laptop case/screen for anything decent? It is 17" and goes up to 1920x1200


Basic Specs: 2.0 Ghz Core2Duo, GeForce 7950M, 2GB Ram (not sure what kind)

p.s. I am simply giving this thought, I am not heart set on doing it. If it's a dumb idea, forgive me, but posts on here are free so why not ask.

You could just keep it closed and hook it up to a mouse, keyboard and monitor.

Yeah this is possible, ripping it apart is not.

Or the other option is to sell it and build a kickass desktop for the money

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I don't think I could get much for it. Computer resale value is extremely low and I wouldn't take anything less than $900 out of principle because I spent $2000 on this when it was new.

It's not really the whole mouse/keyboard/monitor thing either. I really have no problem using the laptop keyboard and my screen is pretty nice. I feel like my computer is slow because it's in a laptop case. I want this cocoon to become a butterfly. Using school computers seems faster for certain things (games run fine, browsers and shit seem to take a while to load up) and I know it's not software related because I just reformatted the other day and I used a RAM checking utility for 18 hours before reinstalling windows.

I got the laptop in the first case because I spent 3 months in China and while I was busy a lot of the time I didn't want to be totally bored in my downtime; plus I figured if I ever traveled in the U.S. it would be nice to have a computer I can bring with me that'll play games but I've yet to use it for that reason.

You'd get about 1k-1.4k depending on condition.

It's an older model, processor can only be upgraded to 2.4ghz at a cost of about $300 and the graphics card is topped out.

*thinks* Maybe if I upgraded to 4GB ram and a bigger HD (2 cheap upgrades), installed Vista ultimate (school gives em out like candy)......I could sell it for more

the biggest thing that's probably killing it's performance is the HDD.  It's most likely a 5400 rpm drive.  If you upgraded to a good 7200 rpm drive it would probably pep it up for you.

I'm not sure how much it would help but it is the bottleneck in most notebooks.  And yes it will help most tasks, think about it everything is on the HDD so the faster it can access the the quicker everything will load.

I run WinXP so it's not a Vista-sucks problem.

Vista would actually tend to load those programs faster

It's definitely the HDD. My similarly spec'ed laptop is great to work with with the 7200RPM disk while it slows considerably with the 5200RPM disk
