Had to put my 13 year old dog down the other day. He was a good dog, but a cocker, and we'd adopted him at age 4, and he'd already been through 3 owners, so he had some anxiety issues when we got him. And he was a cocker spaniel, and while he was a good dog, I really don't like cocker spaniels (too many common health issues.)

So, I've been looking at dogs online, just breeds, and I think maybe I'll buy a new dog after chistmas time, but this time I'd like to get a younger dog and be able to train it. so I was wondering what type of dogs you guys would recommend that are good reliable dogs, with no common hereditary health problems. I'm thinkiing a smaller dog, since our backyard is pretty large, but not big enough for a fullsized dog. I like terriers like a scottie or norfolk terriers.

I'll probably look around the humane societies first, but like I said, I'd like to find a younger dog, but at the same time I don't want to spend $1000 on a puppy.

First, if you're looking for a specific breed, consider rescue organizations for that specific breed. They tend to have more adult dogs, but they also have puppies. It does the same thing as animal shelters (in that you're getting an animal that needs a home, love, caring) but you can get a specific breed if you're dead-set on it.

I've had two dogs, which have been on essentially opposite ends of various spectrums

Ollie: A weimaraner. Bit on the bigger side, VERY athletic and energetic. They are NOT for an inexperienced dog owner, and by inexperienced I mean someone who hasn't dealt with difficult breeds before. They're beautiful, but unless you really lay down the law they will consider themselves the head of the pack and walk all over you (sometimes literally, lol). I loved her, but ultimately we decided to give her to another family with the help of a rescue organization for weimaraners. We recognized that we simply weren't giving her the care, attention, and exercise needed for a dog like her so a farmer in Virginia adopted her... much nicer environment for her... big wide open spaces where she can run and run.

Jazz: I hate to play favorites, but she was my favorite. She was a miniature dachshund - if you're looking for small, this is pretty small (she was very long though ). From the first time I saw her I knew she'd be a wonderful dog. She was tough to train I admit - ultimately she'd just go out in the backyard to do her business. We sort of figured out her 'schedule' for it, but that took a while. She also didn't learn a lot of commands, but she was very good-natured. She worshipped us, me in particular because I'd always be playing with her. Very very VERY cute as well. She wouldn't hurt a fly... she tried to be friends with our cat, but there was a bit of a generation gap (a half a year old pup and a 9 year old cat). Jazz was always happy, always.

Unfortunately, she died yesterday. I posted a topic in DST if you wanna know more... but yeah. If I could I would get another one, but if I ever get another dog I won't simply cause it would feel like I'm just replacing her.

If you do go to a breeder, make sure they're reputable. Read this to get what I mean:

A mutt... That when fully grown, standing up at least reaches the knee.

Anything with:
  • German Shepard
  • Border Collie
  • Labrador
  • Rottweiler
  • Alaskan Malamute (sexy as, but a bit much to take care of)
  • Cattle Dog
  • Kelpie

Yea if you want a good small dog get a beagle. They have short hair, very easy to groom and are great with other dogs. They are the type of dogs to take commands from other dogs and usually operate better in pair's or packs. I know sounds weird. But you HAVE to work with the dog so that it comes when you call it, because when it catches a scent, it won't leave it alone.

Get a Labrador. You can train them very easily, I own one that's crossed with a Ridgeback and I'm surprised at how well it picks up new tricks.

I excercise mine fairly regularly so it doesn't get too fat (that lab half can do that if you don't walk them, but his ridgeback side loves to run anyway lol)

Golden Doodle.
Yes, it's a Golden Retriever and poodle mix. Carries more of the traits of a Golden retriever, but he doesn't shed, he's very well mannered, very smart, and his fur has just a bit of curl.
These are very good dogs and I recommend getting one.

I have 6 dogs,
Jack Russel Terrier
Standard Poodle (Huge poodle, bigger then a golden retriever)
Miniature Poodle (Tiny Poodle)
Pomeranian
Japanese Chin
Dachshund

Of all of them, the little ones are by far the "best." If possible, get a Pomeranian from a good breeder. Extremely easy to train, great dog all around. Doesn't need to be walked, but enjoys them if you want to take it along for one. No allergies, quite hardy, though quite small (around seven pounds).

Get a Newfoundland.

https://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images16/NewfoundlandsSatchelJack.JPG

They may be large, but trust me, these are among the easiest dogs there are. If you don't feed them too much, they barely have any breed-specific health issues, they never run away, as they used to be sheep dogs; They want to be with you and keep an eye on you much more than they want to run away. With some proper training, having them loose in the park is very easy.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I see a lot of recommendations for Sporting, Hounds, and Working dogs. If you get one of those plan on walking it twice a day for at least 45 mins. They need a lot of exercise (physical and mental). It's borderline abuse if you don't .

The only problem with him buying a Husky is... they grow very big, but you do have a big garden which is a definite plus!, and cost about $700 for a registered one, could get an un-registered for about $450 I think, but there is a wooo factor as well, people will look at it and be like god-damn that's a class dog, you'll get compliments all the time from stangers.

If you feel a Husky isn't what you're looking for then the one above is a good mention or a small Jack Russel.

But for a dog(Husky) they're great, I never seen a dog with such a good temper, my brothers Husky is about 7 Months old and has not attacked any other animal, and it hasn't even eaten this dog!!! (whos just asking for trouble, shitty quality phone pic)

We have a Jack Russel/Pug mix that looks like a Doberman and he is pretty wild, My old dog was a pure Rat Terrier and he was the best dog I have ever seen.

This new one can walk on his hind legs, kinda strange.
