Just found my old pritner, Epson Stylus R220. Archaic, yes, I know, but it's only for printing college work.

Now I decided to change the ink since it had been sitting unused for some time, I replaces Cyan, light cyan, black and light magenta.

When I went to print a document it said "ink not recognised". I used s-vision cartridges.

How can I get around this so that it works?

i've used generic ink many times at it always works for me. does the cartridge have a plastic "tab" that you need to pull off? did you just forget to remove that?
