LAWRENCE, Mass., Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Police in Lawrence, Mass., said they are investigating the origins of an abandoned safe found with nearly $180,000 inside.
Investigators said the 2,000-pound safe was discovered by firefighters Friday in a lot that is frequently used as a trash dump, WCVB-TV, Boston, reported Monday.
Detective Thomas Cuddy said officers broke through the back wall of the safe after it was transported to police headquarters and discovered the money in cash that was issued in 1982 at the latest.
Cuddy told WCVB-TV police believe the safe was dumped in the lot about three weeks before it was taken in by the firefighters. He said the people who abandoned the safe may not have known about its contents.
