Okay, final thread asking you to build me a rig.

Budget: £250-270.

Need: PSU, Case, Mobo, GFX, CPU, RAM.

Focus: Gaming

Skimp on: Case. Might not even need a PSU, as I have on in my bedroom. Might be really crap though, will have to get back to you on that one.

Need it from UK sites. Thanks, and go.

What about this case? Comes with 400W PSU.

EDIT: 450W*

PSU's that are included typically suck ass. Especially when you're considering a cheap case like that one. I wouldn't be surprised if that PSU shits the bed on you in a month. You are really better off spending the money on a name brand PSU to make sure you're getting good power that won't fail on you in a short period of time.

Is the case any good? Because I could save a fiver on the case and £40 on the PSU, and I'm looking to start working so I could always get a new PSU in a while, however long the included one lasts.

Sydney, what you made was really good. Assuming I'd go for the case I'd linked to, what could you do with another £40?

The case looks like a decent basic case, but you may need to get some standoffs. The one review listed says that the case was missing motherboard standoffs, so keep that in mind.

Screws, right?

I've got a bowl of them sitting on my desk. Lol.

I REALLY don't recommend going for a PSU that comes with a cheap case, but I'd go for this 512mb 9800GT instead of the 256mb 8800GT

Standoffs are different than the screws. They tend to be a bronze color and have one end that screws into the case, and the other end accepts the screws that hold down the motherboard. Without the standoffs, you'll have the motherboard in direct contact with the case, which really isn't what you want to do.

One word: 4670.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

On a budget like that I'd wait until after Xmas. I know it's a hassle - but you might find that the january sales are actually better than the pre-xmas sales.

It was a joke.

Still, 4670 is better than 9800? Thoughts?

You should always wait when buying computer hardware, because your things will become cheaper. Oh, you should also wait because something is coming out in two months. Oh, before you buy that, another thing is coming out in a month! Oh after that there's another thing coming out in two months! Just wait for that!

Enough waiting, I need a computer.

It's a month left to Christmas, you can hold out. You'll get twice as much computer for the money. All stores will be dumping the pre-christmas leftover hardware for super cheap. A guy in your economical position should think like that.

I've just looked at a page, and its benchmarks showed that the 9800GT smashed the 4670 in CoD4, which is the main game that I'd be playing.

For example:

https://xtreview.com/images/9800gt-9500GT-hd4870-hd4850/call.png

And in this chart it shows the 9800GT staying above the 4670 pretty much all the time.
(4670 = red 9800GT = puke colour)

https://xtreview.com/images/9800gt-9500GT-hd4870-hd4850/stock.png

Are you sure the 4670 is the card to go for?

The difference is the price. The 9800GT is twice as much as the 4670 and uses four times as much power, meaning more cash on a PSU.

Don't question the tech junkies.

4670 £73 inc VAT
9800GT £94 inc VAT

Twice as much..?

I've heard good things about the 9600GT/GSO, might be worth looking into. Dunno about price, or how they compare to ATi's offering.
