  • ASUS EN9800GTX vs MSI GF9800GTX OC'd - decision making time!

Okay, well my current Leadtek Winfast 8800GTX of 1 year and 10ish months broke down, tried getting dust and stuff of it but it doesnt work. It displays horizontal lines across the screen and gives a resolution of 640x480ish or whatever, its not going to work again (with a warranty of only 1 year).

So I decide to get a new graphics card, of which is going to be a 9800GTX. However, Im uncertain to which one I should get. Ive done some searches and whatever, and still unsure, hence the thread. Now, I can get the ASUS EN9800GTX with 512MB RAM for $295AU, at factory settings. I can also get an MSI GF9800GTX also with 512MB RAM, which is overclocked (not sure how much though), which is $260AU. I dont understand the difference in price, whether its based on performance or whatever.

Id just like to know what youre thoughts are on these cards, and if I should choose the ASUS over the MSI, or MSI over ASUS.

Cheers,

ASUS over MSI, MSI is one of the worst manufacturers there are.

Also, get a 4850, it's superior to the 9800GTX in every field.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Well if your looking for a vast improvement with an 9800GTX you won't see much of one, unfortunately.

I suggest you save up another hundred and get:

I wasnt really looking for an improvement, but rather a replacement. However Im now considering buying one... I can get one for $420AU... but Im not too sure if my PSU could handle it, as Ive only got 500 watts.

Do you think its a worthwile investment? Will it increase performance? Ive only got an old school Intel E4400 @ 2.4GHz, so Im not sure if such an improvement in graphics processing power will have an overall performance boost, due to the CPU.
But then again, is it worth it paying $125 more for whatever performance gain I will get? Or should I also upgrade the CPU? Ive been considering this for quite a while but I want to save up for a reasonable laptop too.

ur CPU will bottleneck a 260GTX i think....

i think u'd be best off buying a HD 4850 decent price, decent performance... and u dont need anything better unless u upgrade ur other components

In GPU bound games (i.e. most) you'll notice an increase. In CPU bound games (like FSX) you won't.

That CPU should have some nice OC room

What GPU you need really depends on what games you play and at what resolution. For most a G92 (8800GT, GTS, 9600GSO, 9800 series) will do perfectly fine as long as the resolution stays reasonable

9800GT will do 100+ FPS in BF2 all maxed settings, 8X AA.  However, I get ~30-50 FPS in Far Cry 2 on "Very High" Settings, at a 1680 X 1050 resolution.  When I look down/up, the FPS will jump to 60-70, but never drops under 30.

It's a great card, although the 4850 does outperform it, I bought it because it was cheaper, and I was upgrading from a desperately old card (X1300 Radeon).

I suggest you purchase a nice card only if you plan to do PC upgrades soon (within a few months), if you don't, go with the 9800GTX.

I really recommend the HD4850. It is quite a lot better then the 9800GTX and has similar or lower price. If you want to put some more money into the game, it's a choose between 260GTX or HD4870.

And that CPU could be overclocked to up to 3GHz with the stock cooler.

Yeah, I have an E4400 and I have overclocked it to 3.0 stable once, but now I can't seem to get any higher than 2.99...

And if you go for an NVIDIA card... Go for a BFG make

Don't believe you can order from EVGA, search your distributor in Australia.

Btw, thats a non reference design, about the same length of the GTS 512, requiring only one 6pin power connector.

You can't order from here, but heres a link

maybe its just me.. but XFX has never failed me.. and they seem to overclock their cards really well... they may be a little dearer but for performance and stability and peace of mind.. i really dont mind.

4850, or if you have to get a 9800GTX, get the ASUS or BFG one.
