Just a quick couple questions about installing a slave drive.
I want to use my hard drive from my old computer and put it into my new computer as a slave. Now I know how to set the jumpers for it but the harddrives are different. My current harddrive is a Serial ATA (I believe thats what its called) and the one I want to put in as a slave drive is an IDE drive. Also my mother board only has 1 40 pin connector and my optical drive is hooked up to that.
so my question is can I have my IDE drive AND my optical drive both on the 40 pin connector and have my ATA drive on the ATA connector? Would this still work?

I am so not a tech guy and this is the best that I can explain this. I really hope this makes sense.
Here is a link to my mother board:

Pretty simple really. The IDE cable has 2 connectors on the end. The DVD should already be connected to the 1st connector and the jumper should be set to master. Set the HDD jumper to slave and connect it to the second free connector on the cable

I wish it was that easy but my primary hard drive doesnt have a connector for an IDE cable on a SATA cable (if thats what its called) and my old hard drive only has a IDE connector and not a SATA connector.

No, he is referring to the IDE cable that is going to your DVD drive. Set the jumper on the DVD drive to master and your IDE HDD to slave and put it on the proper connector on the ribbon cable.

But how the hell can your mobo only have a single IDE connector on it? That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard of ...

Or, as an alternative to what CapnNismo said (if your mobo fucks up or something, i dunno) you could:

Connect DVD to the second IDE port on the motherboard, attach the DVD to the master end of the cable
Connect HDD to the first IDE port on the mobo, also attach that to master end.

However, if the mobo fucks up when having HDD on the first slot (i'm saying this because it happened to me, but hey my mobo is really retarded ) swap the HDD and DVD

leave your primary HDD alone. We're only dealing with the IDE HDD and the DVD drive

You must not have a newer motherboard.  Most now only have one as most HDD's are SATA.

I knew most HDDs were SATA now, but I figured your average run-of-the-mill mobo would STILL at least have the standard two PATA ports. Guess not.

How many SATA drives can XP and Vista handle, though? Last I knew/heard, XP could only handle 2 SATAs and 4 PATAs.

AFAIK there's no limit for XP or Vista

So you can have up to 8 SATA HDDs on Vista but only one SATA DVD? Weird.

I could have sworn there was a limit of the number of SATA devices that XP supported ...

No idea, that's just how many I run

afaik there's no limit for XP or vista. At some point you'll just run out of drive letters

I don't think you can assign an A or a B to any drive OTHER than floppy drives. So it is actually 24 ...

There's always the option of RAID and NTFS folder mounts
