Me and my bro were going out to buy a game for the 360 and we just said we're going out to get a game and he said for what. I said 360 our pc couldn't run anything that came out in the last 2,3 years XD. He then went on saying well we could restore the computer and we could play newer games and I sat there laughing...Maybe about 2 mins..He's then says I'm not sure how to do it yet and I said are you thinking of reinstalling/reformating windows? he's not even sure what to do. Sure I'm not tech savvy but I do know some stuff. It would help older games go faster but deff not run new games..

Specs:

Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)
1022MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 256 MB

Anyways the point of this topic is I want to show him that doing this won't help run newer games.

It would help. You could probably run Far Cry 2 on low pretty decently.

About the formatting part, just get an XP CD and follow the steps. It's pretty straight forward.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

You can run everything on the bare minimum and get a decent framrate (15 - 30 FPS, depending on which game). On Far Cry 2 SP, you can run it on low and get ~20FPS. But don't, the game looks like utter shit and is incredibly stupid on low settings, wrecks the entire game. CoD: 4 could run low and get a decent FPS, but nothing higher (800 X 600 resolution) Reformatting Windows won't do much other than make your system speed up a bit, but nothing significant.

Next upgrade you should do is to buy a new GPU, and another gig of RAM. The CPU is still decent, and will run most games fine. I have an E6600 @ 2.4 GHz, I put in a 9800GT and I can run Far Cry 2 on "Very High", 1680 X 1080, and it never drops below 30FPS. (Win XP, Vista runs it on same setting but at 20 FPS) As for the RAM, you can never have too much, so another gig will do nothing but help.

roffle, there's no way a 6600 is going to play Far Cry 2 "decently". I doubt you can even play it period with that card.

Maybe not a 6600, but maybe the OP says 6800...

The last card I had was a 6800 and it played Crysis, definitely jumpy but not 10 FPS can't-aim-for-shit jumpy. You can play newer games but they won't get to smooth framerates.
