So some friends of mine want me to go to NZ to walk some long ass trail or something.  I can't remember the name of it though to look it up.  I guess it is pretty cool.  Little help please?

Also, what is the best time of year to walk the aforementioned trail?

The Milford Track?

There's plenty of different ones, some for sight seeing, others to be physically challenging, etc.

Now would be about the best time of year then, because it is Summer.

from the above link:

The Milford Track is the heart of Fiordland National Park, a World Heritage Area, and also the wildest, wettest and most isolated part of New Zealand. Everything about this area is dramatic and awesome. It was fashioned by massive uplifts of rock 2 million years ago, and moulded by water in all its forms, ice, snow, rain, glaciers, waterfalls, rivers and lakes.
The Milford track is 54 kms long and can be physically challenging. Part of the experience is negotiating rough terrain, stream crossings, and sometimes high winds, but the rewards make it all worthwhile.

If you go to NZ to hike on a trail you will be eaten by ents and orcs. Just be a good little American and hike the Appalachian Trail.

New Zealand's summer months are December to February. But I only say Summer would be better because you'd most likely be hiking through snow during the Winter months and possibly Autumn leading up to winter.

It would still be worth doing during winter, if you don't mind walking 45kms in the snow. It might even look better during Winter with ice covered lakes, but you'd most likely have a rougher time doing it.

wiki wrote:

During the summer peak season of late October to late April, access to the trail is highly regulated. Walkers must complete the track in four days, travelling only in the northward direction. Camping is prohibited on the trail. Walkers can tramp the track independently, or as part of a more expensive guided walk with a guide company. A maximum of 90 walkers can start the trail per day (40 Independent, and 50 Guided). Usually these 90 places are booked out for many months in advance, despite the high cost of the guided walks.

[edit] Independent tramping

If hiking independently, each night must be spent in a hut owned and maintained by the Department of Conservation. The huts for independent walkers have basic facilities, which include bunk areas, restrooms, and cooking facilities; walkers have to carry their own equipment and food.

^ That's because they are walking through world heritage listed forests. You'll get that during any time of the year tbh, summer is more heavily booked though.

If you're going on the Milford Track, firstly, it's awesome, secondly, it won't matter when you go it always fucking rains in the Milford Sounds and it's always bloody cold that far south.

After all, if NZ was an actual comparison of Wales, we might as well be accurate.
