I have an old wireless router (Linksys) and I was wondering if I could connect it by an ethernet cable to my computer so that it can connect wirelessly to the other router?

i think that's possible actually.  you're doing something along the lines of something called a "repeater."  don't know how you would do it though.  i imaging DD-WRT has options for that.  ask j.

It depends on the firmware. Some routers will do that, some won't. Go into the web interface and look at the options, post a screenprint if you find anything along the lines of client mode/wireless bridge/repeater etc.

I have a spare netgear router that i'd like to do this with (DG834GT is the spare, the router i'm using at the minute is a DG834N), any idea how i can get this to work?

I tried using the GT as a wireless bridge before but it didn't seem to have any options in the config to set it like that, although the N router has this:

https://i38.tinypic.com/28jzaes.png

Enable Wireless Bridging and Repeating
Enable the checkbox if you want to use WDS (Wireless Distribution System) feature.
Select the desired WDS mode for your environment.

Wireless Point-to-Point Bridge
In this mode, the DG834N will communicate ONLY with another Bridge-mode Wireless Station, and wireless client association is enabled. You must enter the MAC address (physical address) of the other Bridge-mode Wireless Station in the field provided. WEP can (and should) be used to protect this communication.

Wireless Point-to-Multi-Point Bridge
Select this only if this DG834N is the "Master" for a group of Bridge-mode Wireless Stations. The other Bridge-mode Wireless Stations must be set to Point-to-Point Bridge mode, using this DG834N’s MAC address. Wireless client association is enabled. They then send all traffic to this "Master", rather than communicating directly with each other. WEP can (and should) be used to protect this traffic.

Repeater with Wireless Client Association
If selected, this AP will operate as a Repeater only, and send all traffic to the remote AP. Wireless client association is disabled. If selected, you must enter the MAC address (physical address) of the remote AP.
If anyone can tell me how to set this up so i use the GT router connected with an ethernet cable to my PC instead of my current USB wireless adapter, i'll love them for ever
