On my HDD it says that the warrenty would be void if the HDD experiences a force over 350Gs.

I ask you, how fast would a 3.5" HDD have to be going to experience and impact force of 350Gs?

I asked a guy who's a big physics nerd, but he said a load of things I didn't understand, and gave me a very vague answer.

Ian essentially conveyed that the answer is: Very Fast.

We spoke at length about this in the pub and deduced that it wouldn't have to be as fast as you think.

Hypothetically
If a car crashed into a wall at 100mph and generated a g-force of 350G then a hard drive would generate 350G at a lower speed.

G's are a measure of acceleration. So it's dependent on how long it takes to come to a complete stop (instantly is not possible). Basically how much compression there is in the hard drive and also what it's hitting.

350G = 3430m/s².

So if it takes 0.01 seconds to stop, it only needs to be traveling at 34.3m/s (12.348 kph).

correct, 9.8m/s/s

1G = 9.8m/s/s
so 250G = 2450m/s/s

f = ma
f = (.5kg)(2450)
f = 1225 N
