The proliferation of high-quality body armor has begun to make guns that fire pistol ammunition (such as HK's earlier MP5 or USP) ineffective. In response to this trend, HK designed the MP7 (along with the brand new UCP, which uses the same ammunition) to penetrate body armor, but small enough to be used in place of either a pistol or a submachine gun.

I'm pretty sure SF use Mp5's because it's better than a Thompson and they know more about both than anyone here.Parker wrote:
MP7, UMP .45, P90 (even though thats a design from the 80s)...though, hell i would take a thompson over any of them.
THE best sub machine gun i have ever shot...hands down.
yep, and imo the thompson is better than the MP5.jord wrote:

one of the reasons i love the thompson so much. it is the only firearm i am able to fire full auto (not just bursts), and remain accurate with...that is because of the weight combined with its slower cyclic rof.Reciprocity wrote:
weight, the Thompson is very heavy when compared to a modern submachine guns.
another reason i love the thompson over the mp5.Reciprocity wrote:
And It fires a non-NATO .45acp round. The 9mm parabellum may not pack the wallop of the venerable .45, but I, sure as shit, wouldn't wanna be shot with a 9mm.
