The Irish inventor of a Rubik's cube-solving robot said he is planning to have his creation attempt a world record by solving the puzzle in about 60 seconds.

Pete Redmond said his invention, the RuBot 2, can usually solve the puzzle in about 35 seconds after scanning it with cameras in its eyes and his goal is to have the robot solve the puzzle in one minute including scanning time at the record attempt Jan. 8 in Dublin, The Sun reported Thursday.

"There are cameras in RuBot 2's eyes that scan the cube before his pneumatic arms solve it," Redmond said. "He uses a very efficient computer algorithm to figure out how to unjumble the mixed up Rubik's Cube and usually comes up with a solution of less than 20 moves.

"After the scan, he can usually do the solve in about 35 seconds, no matter how much it is mixed up," he said. "The Guinness World Record attempt includes scanning time, and I am confident that we can do our complete scan and solve in around 60 seconds."

Irish robot? No, not a chance. It'll probably find a way to get drunken & distracted.

I have no doubt a computer would be able to solve it. The only question that comes into play is how fast the pneumatic arms can solve it.

Fastest cubers in the world will solve in around ~11 seconds on average. That gives them 49 seconds to read it. Too easy.

I'm sure a robot could mathematically solve it as quick if not quicker then a human. But until they give it 'hands' with anything near the dexterity of a human it wont win.

I've seen people from my old school who could solve it in less then a minute (including 'scanning time').

those are the people on tv that scramble it and then play the clip backwards.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Not quite...

And something like that would be so easy to spot as you could follow his steps and work out which algorithm he used (or didn't if he was cheating). Not to mention that a scramble would require significantly less time.

I guess he used the force to suck it off the table, eh?
