Well, I modded my old Xbox, and I had like over 50 games downloaded to the hard drive from purely going to Blockbuster, renting and then burning.

However, it died.  (5 years old?)

I got an Xbox 360 for Christmas though, and I'm wondering if it's possible to mod it and do the same thing I did with my old Xbox.  If I did this, would I still be able to use Xbox Live, or would my 360 stop working or be banned from Live for having 'modified' hardware or something?

You can replace the drive to run downloaded disks, if that is what you are asking. There's a few YouTube videos.

There are modchips with stealth firmware and/or switches to turn off the modchip when you're not using it, which allows the XBox to go on Live like the chip was never there.

This one says it has a switch:

Too bad mod chips are illegal in the U.S., but legal in Canada.

Im not quite sure about the legalness of that over here, chances are that your right tho...i never looked for moding. As for "stealth" chip and such, its  all up to you....if you feel comfortable taking the risk, do it...if you wanna be 100% sure...dont. I see "Stealth" in chip sorta like the one we see in hacks...work for a while...big update, thousand of people getting caught at once.

Buying an xbox 360 in the first place is a risk in its self.

Except that the ps1, ps2 and the ps3 never had any catastrophic failures as sony specializes in hardware.

Right, because my PS1 lid doesn't close anymore - is that one of its new "specialized" features?

Must admit that the first 360 were shit, but Micro$oft offer an awsm customer service, something that Sony does not have.

360 Mod Chips aren't illegal. Some xbox 360's consoles can get banned if the voltages are messed with when modding. Only certain models tho, can't remember which ones. But yes, you can chips to mod your xbox that will turn on and off.
