I honestly can't see why people use the other 3rd party apps over it...

I can only point out one thing particularly bad about msn 9 and that is the removal of drag and drop file sharing (replaced with "Share Images" bullshit)...

It's called wake on lan. Check your bios for such an option. Trouble is that also other network traffic tends to wake the PC up.
