  • possibly urgent, CRT monitor may be putting out a lot of radiation

okay I posted this in another forum but they aren't being serious

Awhile back I threw this CRT monitor on the ground in a fit of RAGE, and not sure the extent of damage and have been using it since, it's working perfectly fine, the glass isn't broken, just the plastic casing and its not fully fit in there right

but I just learned that CRTs give out a LITTLE teeny radiation and such,
and now that i've broken it, i'm not sure if it's leaking the stuff or what

can anyone help me before I sprout a tumor or become sterile or just die one night and no doctor can find the cause?

What's the extent of the damage? I highly doubt it.

looking at THIS picture http://www.flippers.com/images/Cocktail-GO7-monitor.JPG (THIS IS NOT MY MONITOR, THIS IS SOME GOOGLE SEARCH)

the things that seem to be the "clamp points are broken the 4 things at each corner

NOTE I HAVE NOT OPENED THIS MONITOR EVER, the plastic outside with screws, I thought about it once, but it is not a simple thing to do so I have not done it, at the risk of possibly breaking it further

I opened my sisters before, but that was because it failed somehow, just out of the blue.

and I couldn't close it so yeah, thats another reason

googled this, http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/mon1rear.gif , looks like where the CRT mounting screws are, its broken, from what I can tell

lolzwat?

well (a-level physics here), a crt monitor is basically a load of electrons being deflected in a controlled way to trace the picture on the screen

electrons = beta particles = a type of radiation

however, they don't penetrate very far and are stopped by a thin sheet of aluminium, and probably a thin sheet of plastic
so basically as long as none of the holes in the casing are pointing towards you, and you haven't messed up the alignement of the electron gun so that the electrons go towards your face. If you have done either of those, go to the doctor, you're fucked

tl;dr as long as theres no big holes you're fine

Beta radiation isn't dangerous tbh. Now, if it was gamma radiation it would be time to panic.

define big holes, in the glass or where the plastic meets the glass in front?

because on the bottom viewing area there is a little space between the glass and the plastic corner, you can't stick a finger between it but you can tell its there (the monitor is kinda diagonal now, so you have to turn it to view it) and you can't see inside the monitor so.....

I would take pictures but no camera or cell phone

The glass would surround the phosphor plate, so you'd be safe.

tbf the more dangerous thing is touching the arse end of the gun.

If it work it mostly mean that the glass is not broken, so no danger of turning bright green over the night.

it is dangerous if it touches you, it's very ionising, it's just not particularly penetrating, being an electron and all

ps gamma is only really dangerous when it's intense beause it's only weakly ionising, although it's high energy and can travel a long way

@op basically if there are holes in the case/screen that are where the image was previously (i.e. where electrons where going (before you broke it) to make the image) then you have a problem

(btw this is reasonably unlikey)

otherwise you're fine.

Any radiation is dangerous.  It just depends how close and how much you get.  Even then, penetration, ionisation, etc is the main factor.  Swallow alpha radiation or beta radiation and you're fucked, because chances are that the hospital won't detect it because of its high ionising properties.  Swallow gamma, and you're still screwed, but at least they know it's there.  On the outside, though, beta is stopped by the skin.  Mostly.  In a hospital, people aren't really that worried about beta exposure.  Now, the emissions you get out of linear accelerators are high as hell (several grays).  A cathode ray tube doesn't come close.

All I know is that radiation gives super powers .

My old 21" CRT had several cracks in the plastic on the sides because it had been dropped. Rather large cracks too.

I haven't developed a third limb yet. You should be fine.

There should be something in the top right corner of your HUD that tells you how many rads/second your getting.

Mm.... If beta radiation got into your system it would kill you quicker than gamma radiation. That doesn't make it dangerous?

To make it clear:

Your screen is 100% safe to use.
The plastic casing contains nothing but air and circuit boards.
If the tube itself would crack, enabling radiation leakage, it would not work at all.
The radiation a CRT can produce won't travel much longer than 10cm.
And it isn't producing any.
Go on browsing the web now.
And close this topic.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

What the fuck kind of psyco throws a monitor at the ground in a fit of RAGE? You deserve any radiation sickness coming your way.

oh yeah, i forgot that, lol, it needs to be a vacuum for it to work

There's a startling lack of knowledge displayed in this thread.

@OP: You'll be fine - see freezers (and others) post(s).

tbh it is pretty dumb to throw ones CRT on the floor just because you are angry at some game

If you notice you're getting a suntan only on the front of your face, call a doctor.

Seriously, you have nothing to worry about.  Radiation is everwhere - the vast majority of it is not harmful at all.  I'm sure there are other things in your environment that produce considerably more radiation.
