Would you recommend it as a reliable way of maintaining backups?? Thinking of using this in my future build since I have over 200GB worth of data that I would rather not lose ...

RAID 1 protects you against HD failures but not against OS fuck ups. If you really want to keep the data safe it's best to do daily backups to a second PC
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

And for that 2nd PC to not be in the same building as the first PC, ideally.

But that's going a little far for your average home setup.

well if the house burns down I'll have bigger problems that some lost data.

But being the geek that I am I make backups to my PC at my parent's place. Not even in the same country

More likely you get zapped by lightning, but yeah for most people anything better is a little excessive.

Its a pain to set up when you can just get an external hard drive

Over here in this part of Europe our stuff doesn't get fried by lightning. We bury our cables in the ground. The big cross country lines are secured several times. Backups exist

Not just Switzerland. Austria has pretty much every cable buried, too.

I've just gone and done another dream build:
ASUS P5Q
E8400 (I don't want to overclock)
Cooler Master Mystique Case
OCZ Fatality 700W PSU (suggest me an alternative for this setup, I think 700W may be overkill)
ASUS HD 4870 1GB
OCZ Flex 2GB RAM (2x1GB)
2 Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB (that might and possibly will change to a 750GB or a 500GB and just run my current as an external for backups)
LG 22x DVD Burner
Freezer 7 Pro CPU cooler

With a Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 OS, that all rings up to $1358.89. Not including the current instant rebates, about $1400. That's just shy of €1000. Now I have to decide what to buy in America in the summer to save some money ... The case will prolly stay behind and I'll have to buy a monitor here. Maybe an HDD, too. Ugh. I wish I was rich like Max.

Yeah, get the Corsair HX520. My OCZ PSU blew big time ( 900W GameXtreem ) and I wont go back to it. I have the HX520 and it's great, as well as it's modular. Non-modular PSUs are fail, tbh.

That Corsair is no good. The ATI HD 4780 needs the 6+2pin for the PCI-E. I really want a modular PSU, though. But New Egg doesn't distinguish that as a form factor on their site ...

I will eventually overclock. I just want to wait for Windows 7, though. That is what is going to run this whole machine ... gonna try and get it in English back home so that way I don't have to learn a new OS in a foreign language. But anyway ... Do you think I should just spring for a quad core, though? Not the i7, but something from the Q-series? Is it worth the performance?

We have at least 4 users here on the forums that all have OCZ PSUs with no problems.  I know Ted has one, Surgeons, me, and someone else...

Download a copy of Vista ultimate x64. PM / MSN me if you need help to get it activated

the quads clock nearly as well as the duals and you get 2 extra cores. Well worth it for number crunching. With win7 we should be seeing more and more multi-threaded apps. Might wanna up the cooler to the xigmatek hdt-s1283 then.

NAS usually have shitty performance. Better to use an old PIII or P4 for file serving

OK, I screwed that up on that PSU ... the ASUS just needs two 6-pin PCI connectors. No problem, I suppose.

Ditched the two 1.5TB Barracudas. Now just one 1TB Barracuda. I've gotten the price down to $1178. Not too bad.

Don't worry too much about the number of PCI-e connectors on the PSU. You can always use molex converters

Well I don't intend on going CrossFire anytime soon or ever buying Crysis, so I think a single 1GB 4870 should handle pretty much anything that I throw at it for a while, right? Then with the E8400 I have a nice overclock ceiling and the RAM is always expandable should 2GB ever become too little.

The only remaining question is quad core - to buy or not to buy?

depends on what you do on the PC. If you only game a dual will do. When you do a little more number crunching a quad quickly looks attractive.

There's a lot more you can do. Transcoding, photoshop, that sort of thing.

I do ... all of that, lol. And I agree with what Zim wrote - I too have the HX520W and it is a superb PSU.
