I currently have a Western Digital 1600JB.  It is IDE, has an 8MB cache, 160GB and has two platters.  I just ordered a Western Digital 5000AAKS, which is SATA, 16MB cache, 500GB and has 3 platters:

Will the 5000AAKS be significantly noisier, a little noisier, or less noisy than what I have now?

First SATA drive ever for me btw.

I would honestly bet on it being QUIETER. Simply because of the newer technology. If not, then it should be just as loud as what you have now.

Wow, I wasn't expecting that at all.  I got the IDE drive in summer of 06 if that matters.

IDE is still old technology and I would imagine that is either a leftover stock from WD or WD just stopped investing in making it better and kept selling an older design for cheapness. idk

I got it from Best Buy for 90$.

I could've saved 40$ and gotten it from Newegg but this was urgent because I had this Seagate 120GB 7200.7 that wouldn't boot after several reinstalls.

Most of the HDD noise comes from vibration. If you shock mount them most of the noise is gone.

WD really turned themselves around recently when it comes to noise output. They used to be horrendously noisy, so the newer the drive, the better the chance of the drive being quieter. I was lucky enough to snatch two 320GB 3200AAKS single platter drives. The only thing I hear from them is a very faint hum of pure, rotating sex when I put my ear down next to them. Completely silent from half a metre away.

I only have a SATA150 port, which the 5000AAKS fills up completely for bandwidth according to Tom's Hardware, if it isn't bottlenecked a bit.  Even with the 5$ price difference(10 at the the time I was looking a few weeks ago), I didn't see much point in getting the Black Edition.

A SATA II will work on a SATA 150 port.  You don't even have to move and jumpers.  I would opt for the $5 more one for the simple fact of how quiet the reviewers are saying.  But, it also has 32mb cache.  When I receive mine i'll post my thoughts on it.  Its going to become my main OS drive with my older 500GB as my backup.

Yeah, I know SATA II drives work on SATA150, that's what the one I ordered is.  But my port will still bottleneck the bandwidth of anything faster than the bandwidth goes, and the one I ordered, although rated at 300, only has a transfer rate of 150 according to Tom's Hardware.

I will be interested in hearing your thoughts on the Black Edition though.

Also think about your future prospects.  I mean if you upgrade your computer that has SATA II you can take advantage of the black edition of the HDD.

I tend to keep HDDs much longer than the PC, so I'd definitely pay the extra 5$ for a higher performance drive, even if my current PC can't handle it

My 74GB raptor has been serving me well since my old Northwood PC. This drive has seen 5 different PCs over its lifetime with a good chance of being used in even more PCs

My old 150GB raptor made so much noise, the newer 300GB Velociraptor is so much nicer and quieter! But I have reason to believe that the Antec 900 case amplifies the noise of the hard drives.

don't use the shitty stock mounting. Suspended drives are much quieter

Like I've got a SATAII drive even though my mobo only has SATAI...

Not that that PC is actually functional atm...

I used to actively cool my HDDs but I dropped it in favor of a well designed airflow solution.

I've been harping on about negative pressure, to anyone that asks, for years, do they listen?

Nope, they still go out and buy huge CPU HSF's and replacement GPU HSF's and stick it all in a case with a single 80mm intake fan, then wonder why their expensive cooling solution isn't working!

/slight over exaggeration.

The word is 'word', not 'work', and that'll be two of them, not one.
