NEW YORK (Reuters) - Connecticut lawmaker Frank Nicastro sees saving the local newspaper as his duty. But others think he and his colleagues are setting a worrisome precedent for government involvement in the U.S. press.

Nicastro represents Connecticut's 79th assembly district, which includes Bristol, a city of about 61,000 people outside Hartford, the state capital. Its paper, The Bristol Press, may fold within days, along with The Herald in nearby New Britain.

That is because publisher Journal Register, in danger of being crushed under hundreds of millions of dollars of debt, says it cannot afford to keep them open anymore.

Nicastro and fellow legislators want the papers to survive, and petitioned the state government to do something about it. "The media is a vitally important part of America," he said, particularly local papers that cover news ignored by big papers and television and radio stations.

To some experts, that sounds like a bailout, a word that resurfaced this year after the U.S. government agreed to give hundreds of billions of dollars to the automobile and financial sectors.

Paper media has been failing because of articles like the above are posted on a website instead of printed the next day.  Gee wiz.

I think most of the big news papers are hurting also, I thought the New York Times was in danger of going under. I hate to say it, but the days of paper news are coming to the end. Most papers have e-papers now.

What's with all this bailout nonsense surely we should let the firms face the free market. Then only the strong and profitable survive. Weeding the unprofitable and inefficient firms out. I do believe the government should offer training and education to help with the temporary increase in unemployment.

Not a big deal really. Many CT newspapers fail because most folks read the Hartford Courant. I think its the oldest newspaper in the United States.

They actually did this in the 70's for small local papers.

I think the interwebs have killed print.

next they will need to start bailing out retailers, cities, states.

Then they will announce that nothing worked and the grocery stores will begin to run out of food.

Then we will start eating politicians.

US Government should basically bailout/buy every single company, and then put it all under the company: USA Inc. (Subsidiary of Gazprom)

Fuck, are they about to set up an "IBS" with forms for bailouts? Just drop off the paperwork and grab your bailout?

'Cos that's where they're heading.

I think it would be really sad if all newspapers disappeared. For me a good start in the morning is a nice cup of coffee and the news printed on paper. You can read it laying on your back and I think it's a lot easier to the eyes than a computer monitor.

A bailout for a newspaper sounds pretty strange, but if the automobile industry is being bailed out now too, there's probably no large step to bail out everything else as well...

That’s like propping up the telegraph industry because the telephone was invented.  It would be sad if paper news became obsolete, but I’d rather not spend taxpayer money for nostalgia’s sake.  The other problem with a bailout is increased government influence on the media.

I still read the newspaper now and then, but only when I have time.

If i have the time, i much prefer it to reading it all on the internet though
