Genius. Let me tell you how I can get you a Ferrari with a full tank of gas for the same price as it'd cost you to fill up your existing car.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
Trick is, I steal the Ferrari.
He already owns Windows XP, which would probably fit even better, due to them being used to it. Besides, in the volumes OEMs buy Windows copies, they pay virtually nothing for them.
Borrowed the XP CD of my girlfriends dad, and he wasn't too happy about me borrowing it, so no chance of my dad getting it.

Also, I doubt he'd want to download vista.

To be fair I bet companies like WD, Samsung, Asus, Acer, Intel, AMD, Gigabyte etc (the list can go on) pay virtually nothing overall after a product has been 'completed'. Your argument is completely void.

And yes, I pirate. (a word I never thought I'd use as a verb)

But they can't get pirated (As easily)

And no matter, that computer is way underspecced for Vista.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Ok no reason to get all pissy here. This is not about building a BF2 capable computer (No idea where the ranters got that from), but rather to find a better deal that the one OP pointed out.

That computer there has many bad sides. For example the known fact that Vista as it is, does not run well on 1GB of ram. You don't have to game to notice that lack of memory. Secondly Acer monitors are shit. Yes it might look good, but they are known to degrade very fast. In a years time the picture will be shit. Thirdly Acer is not known to be the best OEM company ever. I don't know what PSU's they use but I have heard a lot of stories of them blowing up. Acer, as most other OEM builders also use shitty motherboards that have shitty capacitors. It's not rare to have them leak in just a few months. Prebuilt machines also have shitty cooling. It might not do any bad for a CPU to run at 70+C load for a while, but over the years, you know what will happen.

As you can see in mine, and freezer's post, we are taking on the challenge Finny announced in his first post. We are not picking parts for ultimate gaming machine without price limits are we? We are picking far better systems for the same price range. Just as Finny asked.

And not including OS is my choice, in all the builds I pick here. If someone wants it, then go for it, I will not tell anybody to buy OS. Besides for that use one could very well use a linux distro.

And what's with the F@H hate here? It's not like we are save-the-world kiddies, it's not like we expect F@H to instantly develop a cure to alzheimers, geez. It's called science. The project is examining the basis on why these diseases develop, and I am very very certain the very little you have to do by letting the project use your idle resources will eventually help in defeating these diseases. Now if someone wants to contribute to the project from his own money, what is there for you to complain? It's their money, not yours. If you don't want to contribute to F@H then you don't have to, it's completely voluntary.

If you have any more complaints to tech team I as a member can answer to them.

Who cares what he already owns? The thread is about making a better computer than the one linked, and that included an OS. Obviously OEMs get good deals on Windows licenses. If you're going to exclude things just because the OEM can do cheaper, it's not much of a challenge, is it?

exactly.

Vista must be included for this "competition" to be any fun tbh.

where did he say that?

To make it fair you need to compare apples to apples.  By not including an OS to give more $$ to hardware it changes the playing field.

I agree with Mek on some points.

+ 320gb by 'normal home user' standards, isn't small.

+ 19" by 'normal home user' standards, isn't small.

I'd obviously go for a custom build after previously buying prebuilt but that's just me. Most people don't want that.

Of course you can do better custom than the one in the OP but it's not as terrible as some of you make out.

Thing is, you need to be even dumber than Finny to not be able to get an OS for free.

Then why pay for any of it?  Just go steal all the hardware too then the whole thing is free.

Still copyright infringement, to say it isn't theft is merely a trick of words.

I can't really argue that it'll go back and forth in the legal sense, that's the wonder of piracy for sure, but in a practical sense it's clear as day. You are taking away someone's livelihood by making use of a piece of software that they would have otherwise been reimbursed for. Had you not chosen to buy it otherwise is fine, but then you wouldn't be guilty of copyright infringement or theft.

Proof?  I know many OEM's will let you upgrade without voiding the warranty.  Specifically (on a laptop) you can upgrade the ram made by Acer.

A retard friend of mine has an Acer desktop. There's a nice "warranty void" seal on the case. I asked the shop, and they take 40€ to add RAM. Plus the RAM. Which is Acer-approved and 20€ for 1GB 667.
