Ferrari became the first team to launch their 2009 car on Monday, ahead of a season that heralds the biggest Formula One rule changes for 25 years.

The team's F60 car, unveiled at their Italian base, employs a raft of features to meet the new regulations.

These include an energy recovery system similar to those in hybrid road cars and aerodynamic changes aimed at making overtaking easier.

Ferrari missed out on 2008's drivers' title but were the top constructor.

Felipe Massa, who finished a single point behind eventual champion Lewis Hamilton of McLaren, will become the first F1 driver to experience a definitive 2009 car when he gets behind the wheel of an F60 later on Monday.

The car will make its debut at the Mugello test track after snowy conditions ruled out Ferrari's traditional testing venue, the Fiorano test track at their base in Maranello.

Ferrari's new car is the first of a series of launches as F1's teams prepare their machines for the new season, which starts in Melbourne, Australia, on 29 March.

Toyota, fifth last season, unveil their challenger on 15 January, with McLaren's latest model appearing the following day.

Renault and Williams reveal their new cars on 19 January, with BMW Sauber doing the same 24 hours later.

Red Bull announced last week that their car will be launched much later than many other leading teams, on 9 February.

All cars must comply to new 2009 regulations, which include aerodynamic modifications where the front wing will be lowered and widened and the rear wing will become taller and narrower.

Big visual changes this season, look at the size of the front wing - and the rear wing has become smaller and higher, almost like one of those drag racing cars. It's all much more simple due to rule changes (not allowed any of the crazy aerodynamic shit anymore, but hey, slicks are back)

Does seem like they're going back in time though, look at the 2008 car. It's a proper futuristic monster. The 2009 car looks like a 1999 car.

And they've also reduced max rev from 19,000 to 18,000 RPM

I just spuffed in my pants over those slicks.

I think that the rule changes are a good idea. There was too much help for the drivers, it should be down to raw, uncut driver talent tbqfh.

Yeah, well it depends. The 2008 car was a shining example of the very pinnacle of aerodynamic technology, but for this season all of it, or most of it, has been outlawed, so now we're back to square 1 and cars are looking like earlier cars. I suppose it's also a good way of watching how shit is changing, the 2008 car represented 2008. You know, all glamour, top technology, shiny winglets etc and money wasn't an issue.. whereas the financially insecure 2009, the car looks simpler, cleaner and has various green technology like KERS implemented into it, and I think there is even a budget cap this season, not sure about that thoguh.

Besides, F1 needs radical changes like this from season to season to keep things interesting and to keep all the design boffins at the various teams on their toes.

I suppose the main difference is that cars aren't allowed that ground-effect second-front-wing sort of thing that you can see on the 2008 car (under the front), but is completley missing from the 2009 one. Probably the thing that makes the '09 car look so much more simple

You'd probably have a point if you were talking about other seasons, but I think they've said that the difference in the rules between this season and last season (i.e: the formula) is the biggest/most numerous changes for 25 years or some shit like that

I did stop watching Formula One when Hakkinen stopped because from then it was all boring.
But it's just they are making to many changes.
What do we want to see? some boring looking cars racing or some incredibly/crazy looking cars going at 10000000000km/h?
They are making everything greener etc, why? its a fucking formula one car, its supposed to be fast, its supposed to be damaging to the environment because we want to see super fast cars racing each other. I loved the 2007-2008 cars because you look at it and go "WOOOOAHHHH!!!!!!", they are mental.
Now they go for that boring look and that ugly tall back spoiler. It's horribly gone wrong.
You look at the 2009 car and go "ohh...ok". But when you look at the 2008 car and your penis gets erected.

look at that !!!!

Absolutely disgusting. Ecclestone needs his head checked with these new aero restrictions because they are seriously awful looking. Yes, the point is speed but the 1974 car looked better than that. The only thing decent is the re-introduction of slicks.

Yeah, should've been allowed to make the rear wing as big as the front one. You know what I want to see, no rules whatsoever. Well, except for the fact that you have to use at least an engine and it runs on normal fuel that engines run on. I'd like to see what cars people would come up with, and what would be the ultimate racing car when there's no restrictions on anything in place. You'd probably reach a limit where it would be so fast, that the g-forces would be too much for a driver to handle, so that would probably be the only restriction. As it is already, F1 cars are the fastest racing cars (do the quickest lap times) - so I'd imagine you'd get something that looks like an F1 car, except on steroids, and turbocharged V12's and some crazy ground effect aerodynamics shit, and.....damn, it would be awesome.

I'm pretty sure I remember Trulli I think, who spun out and gently hit the wall, reversed out and joined the race again (Monaco?).

You know what i want to see from forumla racings?
You know when a fighter jet goes past like the speed of sound or when it goes very very very very very fast it makes that cloud thing on it self?
i want to see those from the f1 cars when they are at a straight line, going biblically quick.
You just hear the noise and lots of wind following it.

I dislike the new rule that the spoilers have to be narrower. Looks dumb.
But still a nice, fast car.

thats different, nascar and f1 is completely different.
First nascars are fugly and boring.
they race in a fucking circle or an oval shape racing track.
