he music business has finally come to terms with file-sharing, according to executives at the Midem conference in Cannes. But now they have a different problem.

Until recently, the music industry was in a blind panic about illegal peer-to-peer downloading.

Millions upon millions of fans are spreading music around the world, and the people who made and own it don't see a dime.

A vast 95% of all digital music comes from unlicensed sources, according to a recent estimate from the global trade body the IFPI.

But the blind panic now seems to have stopped.

The Recording Industry Association of America, which represents US labels, has traditionally been the most aggressive in chasing file-sharers.

But it has just announced that it will no longer sue suspected offenders.
and
The industry seems to have reached a conclusion that the strategies for fighting file-sharing will not work.

It is now a fact of life.

But now there is a new panic.

If we are not going to stop file-sharing, and with sales falling, the dilemma now goes "how do we make money now?"

That is the question dominating Midem, the main annual industry talking shop.

Howie Singer from Warner Music said his company wanted to see "compensation and not simply control".

"It's interesting to be in a business where there's no issue about creating demand for your product," he said. "The issue is finding a way to get paid for it."
Interesting to say the least

Good. The RIAA are a bunch of fucks for suing totally random people who had downloaded stuff illegally. I think they sued some girl who downloaed 20 tracks once. Ridiculous.

ffs. You release good artists\bands and even if they have music pirated that just equals more potential fans. You then do the usual tradition of musicians making money, you play them at venues for fans to see them live.

I'm sick of cardboard cutout pop-stars who are clearly aimed at teenage girls, who look pretty and can't sing for shit.

If the act is good enough, they will make a fortune when on tour.

Yeah I was always rather worried about my downloading habits and if i'd get a knock on the door one day, it's good that they've stopped chasing. (hopefully this goes for Britain, too)

Now we just need the movie industry to come around, followed by the game industry.

Then the last pieces of the puzzle fall into place.

srsly, if the movie/music/game industries offered non-shitty download services that were reasonably priced (emphasis on that) i'd definately use them

I used to d/l a few tracks from an album, if i decided i liked it, i would go buy it.

I prefer having hard copys to add to the collection rather than a bunch of bad qual mp3s

Couldn't have said it better, tour revenue is one of the main sources of income, unfortunatly it requires the act actually doing some work, which is beyond some of the utter shite that's strangling the music industry at the moment.

The bands make most of their money from live performances and merchandise anyway. Piracy is only hurting the people who sell the musicz, not those who make it.

Um why don't they just make a free filesharing network of their own?

Put high quality music on it. Slow down download rates. Sell banner ads on the program that connects to the network. Give people the option of buying a faster download rate. Then withhold some extra tracks that can only be received by buying the CD. Hold contest with your CD. As in the 10 digit number on the inside of the CD case can be put into our website where you will be entered into a drawing of a contest to meet the makers of this album.

There just saved the music industry.

Negative. Considering my amount of piracy I don't even want them to know I exist.

It's not like the majority of music artists now deserve money anyways.

Maybe if they put at least a little effort into it..
