So I gotta get my wisdom teeth removed next week (if the doc says I don't have pneumonia) and I smoked a lot this last week

Anywho... My friend went under the knife a few weeks ago for deeply rooted possibly cancerous moles, they told him he would be administered anestesia and that he should not smoke the 14 days leading up to the surgery

I'm curious to know if any of you guys had ever heard this before?

I know the anestesia will be both nitrous oxide and a shot in the arm (maybe an IV idk)

Thoughts?

And yes I know BF2s/the internet is not my doctor...

No I have never heard of this before.

It could be the medics way of secretly saying what we already know 'Don't smoke it's bad for you'

I smoke and eat/drink before I get put to sleep and have never had any probs, not that I reccomend going against doctors advice.

The only wisdom I ever had was in my teeth and I was well and truly fucked when they got taken out wasn't I?

I take it you saw the doctor before to schedule this appointment?
If he didn't tell you not too don't worry about it.

Cigarettes cause higher blood pressure and heart rate, interfere with respiratory function both during and after anesthesia. And can also interfere with drug metabolism.

They try to get the balance right when you go under, too light a hit and you could wake up, too strong and your recovery coming out of surgery can take too long. So obv if you've been smoking, taking alcohol the effect of the anesthesia will change. Just be honest to your docs when they ask you about your condition before they sedate you.

Your friend was probably a heavy smoker and mentioned that too his surgeon and they advised against smoking to normalise his blood pressure, etc

And I lmao at your sig. <3 <3 <3

This is kind of right.

A more in depth answer would involve exxplaining how neuromuscular-blocking drugs that are commonly used in anaesthesia act on the nicotinic receptors.  These drugs generally have an inhibitory effect, whereas nicotine has an excitatory effect.  Although the effects of the drugs should far outweigh the effect of nicotine from a cigarette, and it probably wouldn't cause any ill effects, it's generally better to be safe than sorry with this sort of thing.  (You don't want to wake up 10 minutes before they are done operating due to the slight alteration in the effects of the anaesthetic)

For taking wisdom teeth out, you are not fully sedated in the way that you would be for a full-on operative surgery in a hospital.  I'm not sure if they use ketamine or something similar, but while unconscious, you still have some motor reflex function.  The oral surgeon adds more medicine as-needed to maintain the unconscious state.

Although I hope to go to dental school, and should probably NOT say it's ok to ignore the warning and smoke, I would be less worried about smoking prior to the surgery than AFTER it.  You will probably be ok under anesthesia, but smoking after they have been removed greatly increases the chances of dry socket.  I have multiple friends who have ignored that advice and suffered the consequences, so beware...

/\ Okay I read the above, a few hours after that inhaler (that thing is horrible. very horrible)

That makes sense now, sort of, im still a bit fuzzy on some things... But basically your saying taking in some nicotine before the surgery might have an adverse effect on the sedatives effect on me, and not my heart... is that right?

@ Aussie, he smokes the same stuff as me and with the same frequency (no cigs, and a weekly smoker)

I will probably not smoke for a few days before the surgery, to play it a bit safe and have my body/brain functions somewhat normal

/sorry for the rant

addiction is day after day cant live or function without it

5 hits a week isnt an addiction

Well, really I guess 'addiction' has an opinionated definition

but really he was miserable because me and his brother were having a fuckin good time and he wasnt, he had loads of work

if me and him just didnt want to do it anymore we could easily do so, we pass up opportunities to go do it with other people every other day

I edited it because the ramblings used didnt make sense, and what I was talking about had nothing to do with what I read it as... I was tweaking off two hits of that horrible inhaler, I had to chop it up and retype it so that it actually had to do with the topic

mentioned water bongs because it filters carcinogens, which you know could be important because what goes into my body could have an effect with the drugs they will give me

My questions were answered though, no immediate risks having to do with my heart... Thanks CARNIFEX & Aussie

I never said I was bad ass for riding motorcycles and smoking, and my epenis hasnt grown since I checked

This thread isnt even about my hobby :\

Maybe if you would have bitched about this in the thread I made about the weekend, it would have been relevant, but because you didn't and you continue talking shit in a serious thread it makes you come off like a complete dick

I'm going to let this thread die, or you can close it. If you feel like talking more shit about my hobbys, then by all means take it up with a PM, just dont spread your shit all over the forums because you have a problem with me
