Ok, so recently my XP hard drive has had some problems, all kinda my fault. I installed Windows 7 on a separate hard drive and got annoyed that it wouldthen always try to boot into 7 instead of XP, so I tried to install a boot manager. This BSOD'd on me, half way through leaving my XP then unbootable. I tried to figure out what was wrong, and out of nowhere I can get into it now.

But here's the main problem...

It's a 320GB hard drive. Windows only sees 298GB, which is fair enough, but it says it's basically full. At first it said it had abour 28MB free space.

The thing is... I only have about 120GB of stuff on it.

Here's my C drive with the folder's sizes labelled:

https://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c398/FFLink13/CScreen.jpg
Oops, forgot to label Windows. It's 3.87GB

Here's the hard drive in Disk management:

https://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c398/FFLink13/CMscreen.jpg

XP is the C:, and V: is Windows 7.

And here's the C's properties:

https://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c398/FFLink13/CPropertiesScreen.jpg

Now... Where the crap has my space gone? I know a reformat would probably fix it (Well I hope it would), but it's just hassle, you know? I wanna find out if there's anyway to sort this without doing that.

Cheers

System restore enabled or disabled on that drive?

Windows sees every bit of that Hard drive. It's a marketing trick.
The hard drives size is about 320,000,000,000 bytes which is 298GB.
The manufacturers calculate the size dividing by 1000s instead of 1024 and that's where your GB's went.

What you said is true, but it's not the answer to this problem.

Clearly he said that he only actually has ~130GB on the drive. As far as he knows ...

Disable it. Only have it enabled for you primary disk aka win installation disk.

If you add up system restore, pagefile and hibernate - none of that will all equal like 70GBs. Now unless your pagefile is set to an amazingly high number ... look into that.

I have 2GB of page file, turned down System restore to 200MB from 38GB, which has given me 7GB more space and I don't use hibernate...

So there's still something huge I'm missing.

(assuming you just have the built-in defragger)
Computer Management->Storage->Disk Defragmenter->Analyze...
Screeny...
Post...

please

(I want to see the funky 'disk usage' graph thing for your C: drive)

Defragged over the night and it did nothing. Shit load of apparent empty space.

But here's the screenshot anyway:

You took that screenshot after defragmentation?!

If that is a POST defragmented graph, then you need to format.

No, just now, but like I said I did a defrag last night and it did shit all.

So yeah, I guess it was taken after a defrag...

Would it not be worth trying to use a 3rd party defragger? The Windows one seems to suck...

Would a defrag sort my problem out?

That is fubar.

You should indeed have more like 50% free space.

Exactly!

I mean, I haven't tried seeing what would happen if I went over my "Limit", so maybe it's just Windows lying.

I'll copy 20GB of shit over and see what happens.

It's worth a try. Get defraggler and give that a go.

I've a feeling it's not gonna make any difference and a full re-format is in order, though.

Well, tried to copy stuff over and it stopped half way telling me I'm out of room.

I'll reformat the bitch.

probably the install of win7 fubar'ed it.  i bet the headers for all the files are damaged or unreadable by the win XP install, but the space on the drive is being marked as used by the win7 files.  i would checkdisk before the reformat, but reformatting will solve your problem.

Disable it, it's useless.

One word. System Restore.

Well, two words I guess.

Start>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup>Delete all but the most recent restore point.

Don't use it on the files if they say some ridiculous number of GB, it will delete system files. I had it happen once.
First off, system files aren't "ridiculous amount of GB", and second, disk cleanup will never delete system files...

But disk cleanup sucks, so download CCleaner.

Ran CCleaner with all options ticked and it said I get only 481MB free if I did it.

Disk Cleanup. You have to delete the system restore points, or turn off system restore all together.
Disk Cleanup was the first thing I tried.

Saved me a few gigs, but not the missing 150 or so.

Because it's not helping solve the problem, mebe?
