I'm going to be purchasing all new stuff in the next week or two, and I need suggestions.  I have built a few computers, but I have no idea as far as compatability and power.  Please help

  • +/- $1100 not including keyboard, mouse, speakers and monitor
  • decent upgradability
  • can play current games on at least medium settings

Thanks and let me know if I need to spend more to achieve the above.

E8400, GTX280, 4GB RAM, P5QL, HX520, P182, etc etc. Just like all the other build-me-a-rig threads.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

OK so E8400 + P5Q + GTX280 + PC Power & Cooling 610W looks good.  Is there a better option as far as mobo/CPU (maybe around $150 more combined)?
For RAM, is it best to go DDR2 or DDR3?
What about a sound card?

I'd go with the Corsair PSU, I have it's big brother the TX750, you will never have a problem with it.

DDR2 I think is still the way to go, and do you really care enough to drop cash on a sound card?

i can recommend the soundblaster X-FI Titanium sound card. its a good price and good quality. imo the fatality version isnt worth the extra money.

CPU: i can recommend the E8400
Motherboard: My P5Q-Pro is going excellently
RAM: i can recommend 2x2GB 1066Mhz OCZ Reaper
GPU: My 1GB 4870 can run every game i own (cod5,cod4,crysis warhead, far cry 2) on highest settings, large resolution and AA excellently.
PSU: My Antec 650w truepower trio is going nicely.... but there are definitely better PSU's out there.

You've obviously never used a good soundcard, eh?

Yes I want a good soundcard...however, I have heard there are problems with soundcards and Windows Vista?  Does anyone know anything about this?  If so, should I choose a different OS like maybe XP?

What's a good HDD, or does it matter really?  I don't think I need RAID as I'll probably just have most media/backup on an external drive.

It's only old and Creative cards that fuck with Vista. Get a Xonar.

NO! Think of the bricking issue

While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

who wants to reflash their drives several times until it doesn't fuck your drive?

I think its possible there are drives being sold with old firmware too. I wouldn't bet its 100% sure the patched drive.

edit: we even think the same max. <3

To be honest the hard drive isn't of major concern.  Mostly it's having a mobo that supports upgrades (like SLI and a new CPU), making sure I have enough psu power, and making sure the RAM+mobo+CPU+GPU all are compatable.

SLI + C2D / C2Q is just a bad idea. You need an nvidia chipset. They suck badly
