...the part time of your life.

I have always planned on going into the military, but after school. I am doing my final year and the next intake is in July. I was just wondering, not too country specific, but just anyone that may have military experience that can relate, is it a good idea? I plan on going to Australian Defence Force Academy after school and becoming an officer and GSO Pilot anyway, would it be useful, perhaps even helpful, to get this experience under my belt? The training takes 4 weeks at RTC Kapooka and there is 10 weeks total (I think) in various places which I can finish next year if I want to as to not disturb my studies too much, and its tax free pay.
So, should I go for it?

If you decide to go to uni, the army\airforce\navy can pay for your degree, provided you then spend 3\4 years in the service. It's kinda like graduating with an engineering degree, to then go into a job maintaining aircraft for example. You are paid while in the ADF also, so your education came at no cost, plus you've got a job you can continue long after, or change jobs leave with your degree plus work experience plus ADF training.

Talk to a recruiter if you are serious and look at all your options. The above might not suit you, I considered it when I started uni but decided against it.

Yeah, I called them just before I made this post, have an appointment in march to talk things over. And when I was researching becoming a pilot in the RAAF, if I went to ADFA its 11 years in the service, not sure if its the same for helos.

Well shit, it used to be if you were a Veteran companies would snatch you up. Now, not so much. It is called vocational rehab, because I was infantry and that doesn't translate to much in the civilian sector, they are sending me to get a new trade.

Most states offer free college to combat vets. (Only state schools not private)

Ooo, the Air force does something good then. Come out of the RAF with a nice clean record and good logs, and you may as well be a BA pilot.

lol, that's why the RAAF Pilot return of service obligation (or w/e it's called) is so fucking long.

Edit: Of course in this case it would be flying for Qantas or Virgin Blue.., not BA.

RAAF doesnt have reservist pilots

Unless Im an idiot and reading your posts wrong?

Im thinking of doing reserves too, but still not sure what I really want to do after school yet either.

If I do join full time, I'd go through Duntroon rather than ADFA. Ive heard from some former soldier that going through ADFA is a bad idea or something. Idunno.

14 years in the RAF i think.

14 years of what is widely considered to be the best flight training in the world

I'm still tempted, but i want to see what options are open commercially first - 14 years is a fucking long time.

I know, i've thought about this.

Drinking i can cope with, for smoking i'll just buy a box at niccy patches and cover myself in them

and then get totally nailed in the airport bar

However long it is, you need to look at the future. In (since next year is 2010, if you join then), you'll finish in 2024. Who knows what will be happening around then anyway.

Yep there's that.

And i'm not sure if i could tolerate being in the RAF for so long, i know it'd make me ultra-employable, and i'd fly multimillion £ jets very fast and blow shit up, and be paid for the privilege, but i'm not sure i could stand the bullshit and so on involved.

not true I don't hate anyone except liberals and Islam, it is just laughable how real world problems are solved by people sitting in a classroom, who have never experienced the real world yet.

a degree is nothing more than a license to learn, it is a pasport, nothing more.

I was 6 months in the Finnish Air Forces. Got out a few weeks ago. I wasn't pilot or anything cool like that, I was trained to be in air base guard company/air surveillance company. Atm my war-time post is the guard company.

Its 1st class troops (the ones that are called to service first in a threat of war) so I get lots reserve training in future :S
