BBC wrote:

Chipmaker Intel is closing five plants in the US and Asia, with the loss of between 5,000 and 6,000 jobs, as it responds to falling computer sales.

The facilities to close are its factory in Santa Monica, California - its last in Silicon Valley - and sister sites in Oregon, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Intel said the two US factories were based on older microchip technology.

The announcement comes a week after Intel reported a 90% fall in profits for the last three months of 2008.

Intel's profit for the quarter totalled $234m (£160m), down from $2.3bn a year earlier.

You're about two days slow my friend.

(not that anyone else noticed my subtle dropping of said news either)

The bit I saw on the BBC News Channel about it said it was due to reduced sales, so, as I said in the above linked post, expect price drops.

Oh, and 3 days and 8 hours, in fact.

Core i5 might help them, i7 has not been a great success so far.

It was ment to be the wet dream of enthusiast and it has sold it self to enthusiasts really well. It just isn't yet a money making architechture for Intel as it is not ment for mainstream. YET

EDIT: Intel has absolutely no reason to dumb the C2Q as the fact that AMD got on same level with the performance of C2Q is still one gen behind Intel's i7.

Enthusiasts make up 0.01% of the market.

The i7 is too hot for servers.
The i7 is too expensive for OEMs.
The i7 is too lacking in price:performance for a home user.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Not i7, the processors are not that expensive for performance, but the fact that you have to buy a holy-shit expensive X58 mobo and still very expensive DDR3 too. Tech world is not ready for i7 as of now.

As said before... Intel has no reason to make i7 mainstream yet as AMD is not threatening its performance crown.

Agreed on the i7.

Core i* can wait till the world economy improves for most.

But I expect we'll see Core2 price drops, and AMD price drops, pretty soon - in fact they're probably both waiting for the other to make the first move.

i7 prices get sliced soon too. but the price of the i7 CPUs is not the problem in first place...

I was referring to it as a system.

Because, you won't be using any i7 without that X58 mobo.

I guess this is a good thing since maybe AMD will gain some ground? I'm not a fanboy, don't worry; I just like competition... better prices for us!
