Not very impressive. It's the same game I played three years ago with more bells and whistles and slightly better combat. I wasn't expecting much after extraction point and perseus mandate though.

Not expecting too much from it to be honest. I know that they're scrapping Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate and calling them non-canon but I get the feeling that since they're starting with a new main dude and a new set of characters they're going to ignore all the unanswered questions of the first F.E.A.R. The problem with this is that it's piss-poor storytelling. F.E.A.R left me intrigued, it's expansions, (EP at least, never played PM,) left me confused. I forsee this being a Lost/Heroes/Prison Break type scenario where more and more things just keep happening, more unanswered questions are piled on and eventually any conclusion the game comes to simply won't live up to the hype of everything that's preceeded it.

I'm prepared to be proven wrong. I've always enjoyed the scary shit F.E.A.R has had on offer, (which made the combat sequences between these kind of a hassle, me just wanting to rush through them to get to the next mindfuck.) It may not have the best gameplay but it's enjoyable enough. Playing at night with the lights off, a flask of whisky at your side and, if neccesary, a frech pair of shorts at your disposal is great fun.

I think i'll pass on this one.

Visually, for me, it's gone down. The film grain effect is annoying, the hud looks like cartoony trash, and overall it's just not that great.

Gameplay = been there done that(yawn).

I liked how I spent several minutes rearranging their horrid key binding configuration(FFS, *it should be* "shift" is run, "ctrl" is crouch, "right click" is zoom, etc. ect....)
just to have it go immediately back to default when i started the game.

Most of you will probably disagree with my overly critical opinion though.

THe full game is out too by now I guess and it´s upposed to be awesome. Not as good as the first one, but very close.
And many of the unanswered questions are adressed in this one.
It still has a lot of textboxes to read through to follow ht estoryline though.

I´m really tempted to play this, but I havn´t played the first one cause I am scared shitless. I wanted to play it for years, so I got the special edition which features some making-of videos and a background vid on alma and Prof Aristide. But that one was so scary, it kept me from installing. I´m a pussy, I know.
Hm...maybe now....

So I played the demo - I know it's harsh to judge a full game from a demo but I asn't impressed.

There are some cool new effects but they give more to the headache factor than the fear factor.

It's like... this is a very shallow interpretation, but it's like F.E.A.R was The Ring or The Grudge, (with a lot of shooting and action,) and F.E.A.R 2 is Friday the 13th part number-above-five. From using subtle xenophibic elements to just showing twisted shit happning. It almost reflects the rise in the popularity of Saw and Hostel movies. Cheap thrills, not a lot of substance.

I'm debating whether I get this. I'm just hoping that the plot devices carefully constructed in the first F.E.A.R are given justice in the second.

Oh, and I hate the new HUD but the new young-version Alma is creepy as Hell.

wait, you had to change them to the standard FPS config?  or it was already "shift" = run, etc. and you just didn't like that?

Is this 100% true? I didn't play EP or PM and don't want to play this before them in case I'm missing out on part of the storyline.

Also sisco source of that special background video?

Not really, that's what demos are there for. You try them and the impression it makes on you from the demo influences if you buy the full game.

I really don't know why some developers deviate from the standard. It's just retarded.

Oh, and i forgot to add to my original post that some of the key bindings would not work with my mouse.

As Ty said, it´s true. They leave out the add-on.

The Video is part of the Fear "Director´s Edition" DVD bonus content. Making Of, developer comentary, and a funny machinima. The said one is called "F.E.A.R. prequel.

How do you know?

The one problem F.E.A.R always had is the mix of subtle horror and balls-to-the-wall action. As Yahtzee noticed with the second expansion pack the sequences interchange with an almost audiable clunk. I hope that with this one they'll concentrate more on the subtle horror aspect because that's what F.E.A.R is really good on. As far as combat F.E.A.R's not much different from the thousands of other shooters; it's the horror aspect that sets it apart.

The demo was a showcase of the toys you could play with. It gave you every gun you could possibly need within five minutes and even a bloody mech thing to play with. I expect, and short of that, hope that there will be more of a buildup because the first level of the original F.E.A.R, even though there was no-one to shoot, was one of the best parts of the game.

I still have hope for it. I just hope they make subtlty more of a focus than giant pools of blood and skeletons and things jumping out and yelling "BOO!"

Played. Weapons are typical, you'll only ever need the SMG and rocket launcher.

The horror style is somewhat predictable from a couple moments.

1) Climbing up throug the train car. The color scheme changed dramatically and all you could see through the car was open sky (through a hole in the roof) after you had been tunnel crawling made something feel inevitable, BAM, Alma.

2) Theatre with the back wall blown through. Made one feel like something should be there, BAM, abysmal scene from the intro.

There are some nice moments. Turning around without any cue to see someone or something sneaking up on you, only to be a hallucination, did get a bit freaky. I screamed though, lots and lots. I assume the more predictable moments are involved with the story more then less, which wasn't revealed too much in the demo.

To me, it didn't feel as "real" as the first FEAR did. Yeah, it was scary and all but not in the same way. It was more of the "turn around and see the girl you didn't expect, BOO" kind of scary than the other, nigh indescribable kind. The combat was okay, but I would even go so far as to say a bit too easy. Those ghosts were somewhat of an annoyance, though. I did like just exploring the first part before the enemies where I wasn't sure if I had to expect things when clearing out a classroom or not. I certainly didn't like the end of the demo, though, with the mech. It felt a bit like one of those futuristic 2142 style of games, something I don't want in my FEAR.

If this didn't give you chills, you aren't playing it right.
1.  Play at night w/ no other lights on.
2.  Play w/ headphones.
3.  Play w/ EAX

Working through the school was the best part as you weren't sure when you'd encounter an enemy.  The area where the girl was crying and the lights were cutting out or flickering while the lockers slam repeatedly were pretty good.  Sound seems improved, too.  When you shoot out a window and jump through, your boots crunch on the glass.  The ability to flip things over for cover is a nice edition to combat as was the sniper rifle.
