If I bought a GTX295 (1.7GB VRAM) and combined it with 2GB of system memory under 32-bit Windows XP, would I lose some of my RAM? I think the limit is 3.2GB for XP, so wouldn't the 1.7GB from the GTX leave me with 1.5GB of system memory? Or will I be left with 1.2GB for VRAM? Or does that fact that the GTX is two separate cards, each with 896MB of RAM, mean that I will only have 2.8GB total, and fall under the limit?
Uhhh, I am not that smart, but I am pretty sure that vram and ram are different. I would think the video cards ram is just for the video card to use, and that xp would just be looking at your actual ram (i.e. the 2 gig)
So I wouldn't think you would lose anything?

You shouldnt lose anything.
In XP 32 bit, it will use a varying amount of RAM if you have 4 gigs of RAM. Depending on other parts in your system, 32 bit OSes will utilize less or more RAM

It'll be fine. If the 295 had 2.5gigs of VRAM, then you'd lose 512mb of your system RAM, but since it doesn't you'll be fine.
That would be fine. however if u ever upgraded to say 4GB u would definitely not recognize all of it (amount recognized depends really.... it doesnt seem to always follow the same trend)
you should be fine but with XP it will restrict your card to DX9, so I would recommend Vista 64 bit
Here's a question: would you be able to run 32-bit programs in a 64-bit environment?
And those of you running 64-bit, what are you using as your browser?

1: I won't get on the no effect train. I sorta doubt it, but if you're unlucky with your other hardware you might actually drop below 2GB with 32bit
2: 2GB ram WTF? Get 4GB+!
3: 32bit WTF? Get 64bit!
4: XP WTF? Get Vista! Multi GPU scaling is just so much better

"Do you want to install this unsigned driver? No/No"
@Capn: Yes. Just like how you can run 16-bit software in 32bit.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
Firefox for most things, Chrome for when I need to look up something quickly (such as something from the Fallout Wikia).CapnNismo wrote:

"people in ny have a general idea of how to drive. one of the pedals goes forward the other one prevents you from dying"
meh, pretty much everything has signed drivers now. All my PCs are 64bit now, everything has drivers. The situation really improved in the last months/weeks. The only thing that didn't work before was OCing software and VMware. Both have signed drivers nowFreezer7Pro wrote:

I have had total of 0 problems with Vista I have had quite some times now. Every driver I could think of is signed these days.
Like max said, multi-gpu scaling just rocks on Vista vs. XP and the best drivers are on Vista now. Hell Vista is noticably faster with a single ATi card too. (you can find the results with google)
XP + GTX 295 would make this techy cry....

I remember the horrors of trying to install RivaTuner on Vista 64. It just. Didn't. Work.

Yeah, that was terrible fail
But now it works
Anyhow reflash > rivatuner

Thanks for all the input.
One more thing - will the GTX295 be bottlenecked by a PCI 2.0 x8 slot? From my understanding, x8 2.0 is as fast as x16 1.1. Would this limit the performance of the 295?

Thanks the answers. Probably going to buy the Win7 Ultimate which should end up coming with 32 and 64 versions. I have the 64 bit version of XP disc sitting around, never installed it, though.

And just get Vista 64 (or 32, it'll recognize 4GB...), it's more stable, any OS that first releases shouldn't become your primary OS until a few solid weeks/months so that the GPU companies and such have to time to catch up and make drivers for Win 7, etc.
That was the plan. I was going to wait a few months after Win7 comes out before I bought it. Besides, all Vista drivers work on Win7.
win7 is not ready for gaming yet, it lacks certain directx features that will be on the actual release. And it will certainly benefit from having optimized drivers instead of Vista ones.CapnNismo wrote:

so waiting is a good plan.

As I said, I fully intend on waiting. I am just thinking about getting 64 bit so that way there will be nothing to hold back the expansion of the computer when it gets built. Just look at my Win7 Build link in my sig.
No it's not. 32 bit calculates system RAM and VRAM together.Cybargs wrote:
VRAM and System Ram is completely unrelated... You won't lose anything.
However, you only have 896MB of VRAM.
On my quad 8800GT rig I got 1.7GB usable ram with 32bit

Is it just me, or have we finally reached the point that you have to have Vista64 bit to have a serious gaming machine? Think about it man, you have to have Vista for DX10 and 64bit for these RAM configurations. Panzer for example his, 920 3 x 2 GB tirple channel DDR3 and 295 on XP would = fail.
Just get an OEM version of vista. I got one when I built *this machine, works great.
