Remember those 1,400 immediate layoffs at Microsoft we discussed yesterday? While MSFT said the cuts would come from "R&D, marketing, sales, finance, legal, HR, and IT", turns out some of the MSFT employees affected also came from the Entertainment and Devices division, which includes Microsoft's games unit. Gamasutra is reporting that yesterday's layoffs hit Microsoft's ACES dev team hard. In case you didn't know, the ACES studio is responsible for Microsoft's Flight Simulator and Combat Flight Simulator series. These games have historically been a huge cash cow for MSFT, with the series dating all the way back to 1982, and have an ultra loyal fan base: like Quake, Half-Life, and Unreal Tournament, Flight Simulator is known for its excellent database of user mods, with enthusiasts adding new planes, scenery, and other add-ons to the game. Gamasutra says multiple reports they've received have even said the entire ACES team has been axed.

ACES was currently working on Train Simulator 2, no word on how that project, or the future of the Flight Simulator series will be affected as a result of the layoffs.
Wow, I have a official lost faith with Microsoft games. First fucking Ensemble studios (AOE Franchise) then this.

Fuck Microsoft. What a horrible decision.

Oh c'mon. You know we're gonna need to blow up the world some day, might as well get the tools for it now.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Lets not turn this into a Bush hate thread, its about a company with Billions of dollars cutting a 27 year old department responsible for making one of the biggest series in PC gaming because they weren't making money.

Really sucks...I mean, FSX is a great game and all, but it's missing quite a few pieces and quite a few planes.

It's been running since 1982 though...I'm not sure if they're going to can it completely. This article reassures that:

You know how Microsoft closed Ensemble then signed them on to keep making games? And how Bungie are still making Halo games? And how ACES have been let go but Microsoft still sound like they want flight games made? Yeah. There's a pattern there.
