Just choosing the most expensive components does not equal a good system.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

i7 is not the way to go for a system right now. In fact, now is not the time to go for a new system if you've been saving for that long. I know it hurts, but if you wait for the i5, you'll get a system you can actually take full advantage of. The i7s, especially 965, are overpowered as hell for a non-benchmarking system. You should at least wait until there are other mobos available than the X58s, as you will never, ever use all the features on them.

If you absolutely need a new system now, get a 920 and a GTX295 or two. The 4870X2 isn't performance king of the hill any more. Also get a Corsair PSU. 750TX for a single 295, or 1000HX for dual will do nicely. Also get a decent case, like a P182 or Coolermaster HAL.

And do you really need a WLAN card? You should really run wired for a gaming machine.

hit the order... I recommend

btw you probably would do jsut fine with i7 920 and p6t deluxe and overclock the 920 to 3.8ghz like I did...

edit: and yeah use the money you save by these changes to get GTX 295

I'd hold off with the GFX till later this week, those catalyst 9.1 previews seem to be giving off very nice gains,

Meant to be released by friday.  Apparantly they have done alot of work on crossfire, and wanted to cause an upset after the release of the GTX 295, unless you play tomb raider lol

Bell, does 9.1 bring any big gains to single cards as well?  all i ever hear is "Crossfire gain" in all of their hotfixes and new releases.
"people in ny have a general idea of how to drive. one of the pedals goes forward the other one prevents you from dying"

I think they concentrated more so on crossfire.  This is the second preview (well actually third), that keeps hinting to these gains for crossfire, but, until they release its kind of all up in the air.  According to one of the Beta testers over at OCUK, while under NDA, he did talk about major work on crossfire.

There was also talk about DX10 is bein made multi threaded at a driver level and you will now get a boost if u have a dual core and even more of a boost if u have a quad, which I assume translates into boosts all round.

I would of thought the 4870 vs GTX 260 216 is the more important fight but flagships always set the tone.

Martyn

Edit:  They apparantly just got released by the link on the official site isnt updated :\  If anyone finds them let me know ;)

f7p is speaking the truth though, all to often in these forums I see people just picking the most expensive parts for their recommendations.
You'll see some one come in looking for a vid card with a budget of $180 or so and most of the posts are "get a 4870X2" same for all components, which I find much more asinine than F7P's post.

As for the OP, def aviod the 965, way to much money for the gains, either the 920 or like f7 said, an i5.

This guy definately wants something else than a 180 dollar gfx card.

I personally have both the 920 and GTX 295 and considering his budget, I see no reason not to get i7. I have enjoyed my i7 for a long time before the i5 will even be released. And overclocked to 3.8GHz it will stay faster than anything being sold for a good while (till Westmere claims it's place).

965 is waste of the money... it is an oc toy for LN2, nothing more. 920 overclocks just as high as 965 with regular cooling solutions. It's the cooling that limits the oc even on 920.

With 1000w PSU you will have enough juice for anything you'll possibly want to put there for years to come without having to worry about upgrading it. Atm best bang for buck at 1000w range is Corsair 1000HX which is awsome PSU. (yes GTX 295 needs a lot juice and even 750w will run at pretty high usage. 1kw PSU will run cooler and quieter and tbh its not that much more expensive.)

Asus P6T Deluxe will do just fine as mobo... It has more features than I doubt anyone will fully utilize and I wouldn't throw unnecessary extra for pimp buttons on the rampage.

It's pretty clear you want the best performance so one or two GTX 295s is what you want.

That Silverstone is excellent choise as case. Probably one of the best out there.

That Corsair Dominator kit will do nicely. I have heard nothing but good about it.

Not sure about that sound card... you'll need to ask .Sup about that... he is the audiophile here... but I'm sure it would do just fine.

And WLAN is not great for gaming oh no... wire for that...

And remember to get a good cooler for that i7. I recommend Noctua NH-U12P SE1366. It is very popular and much loved. Installing it was easy and cooling performance is great at minimal noise.

There is no HDD in your list... I would recommend Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB drive. They are just excellent.

All in all my recommendations go hand to hand with Max. Case is always a personal choise and only one that can tell what you want is you. Silverstone is indeed really good.

I hope this helps...
