Thats amazing. But how many servers are going to be pushing 1GB of data to someone?

I mean I figure iTunes might be able to do it I usually get like 1.5-3.0MB/s when purchasing a movie, but is it reasonable to say that someone with a 1GB/s connection will download things substantially faster than any 10MB/s + connection?
First off, it's 1gb (gigabit) not 1GB (gigabyte). 1gbps (gigabit per second) is 125MB/s (megabytes per second).

Surely 125MB/s is faster than 1.25MB/s, ja?

I'd be happy with 1MB/s, I max @ around 600KB/S.

I need Fiber Optic, DSL sucks.

My mistake.

But my point is still valid.

Do you think people are going to be able to download at rates of >65MB/s with a connection like that? I don't think servers will give that high of a rate...

My house has a 10MB connection or something of the sort, and I get download speeds of about 600kb/s on the internet, and on iTunes about 2 MB/s or so (same with some torrents)

What's theoretical about it?
When was the last time an ISP delivered what they promise? Honestly. Even with all this tech, they're gonna be overloaded as fuck.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

My connection speed is as my ISP says.

However, my router sucks cockfuck so it eats the bandwidth, but hey..we can't all get what we want eh?

If they get a 1Gbps terrestrial optical connection, then they're getting 1Gbps. Nothing theoretical about it. The optical tranceivers don't operate at dynamically variable frequencies.

As for infrastructure capacity;

Code:

--13:04:37--  http://mirror.tyroll.dk/ubuntu-releases/intrepid/ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso
Resolving mirror.tyroll.dk... 82.143.255.54
Connecting to mirror.tyroll.dk|82.143.255.54|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 732766208 (699M) [application/x-iso9660-image]
Saving to: `ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso'

 8% [========>                                                                                                             ] 60,860,528  72.5M/s

Code:

[mikmar@hoerskaetten ~]$ cat /proc/ide/hda/model
ST380023A
That's ~600Mbps after protocol overhead, and that's limited by the harddrive. There's no reason why they can't deliver a host-to-border 1Gbps product. I do it on a daily basis.
