It's not going to snag 11 Oscars, but The Dark Knight—Christian Bale and all—is nipping at Titanic's heels in the court of public opinion.

The 2008 blockbuster has surpassed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, Warner Bros. announced late Friday.

According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, the critically acclaimed Caped Crusader sequel—which actually could win eight Academy Awards on Sunday—is now in fourth place on the list of all-time box office grosses, behind only Titanic ($1.84 billion), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.12 billion) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.07 billion).

The Dark Knight is currently sitting pretty with $1.001 billion, while the fifth-place Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is way back there with $974.7 million.

$533.1 million of that billion-plus sum was grossed in U.S. theaters, while $468 million was raked in overseas.

Warner Bros.' news comes along with the announcement that The Dark Knight is also now the top-grossing 2-D IMAX release of all time, with $64.9 million grossed worldwide.

What do you think? Does it deserve that much popularity?

No, it doesn't. I think it sucked pretty major ass.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

The only reason it got as much popularity as it did was because of Ledger's death.

It was still quite an incredible movie, but that's why it grossed as much as it did.

In contrast to all the hype, yes it did.

But if you don't allow your expectations to be increased by all the dumbasses hyping it, it isn't a bad movie.

Pretty much, yeah.

A good movie with great effects and storyline, but Heath was the highlight of the movie and his death was the highlight of it all.

imo, i think it got so much money because EVERYBODY was talking about it. everybody wanted to see what all the hype was about so they watched the move. I personally didnt watch it and i dont plan on watching it.

I enjoyed it. Up until a point it was very good - then it got kind of wanky with all the characters trying to second-guess everyone else's ideologies. On the whole though I think it lived up to the hype.

As it is a movie dedecated to an Australian and a New Zealander, (the other guy mentioned with Ledger, Conway Wickliffe was a New Zealander,) as a southern-hemispherite I'm not going to complain about its popularity.

The whole thing with Two Face holding Commish. Gordon's family hostage was way too drawn out.

Other than that, I don't really have a problem with any other part of the movie.

You will if it over takes LOTR.

But anyway, we all know boxoffice earnings mean jack shit. It's sales figures thats really important and Gone with the Wind shits all over everything else.

Nyet, 'cause it won't take over Return of the King, (or the trilogy in full,) in Oscar count. That's the real dick measure.

Yep, I love it. Then again I loved the first one too purely because somebody captured a version of Batman I can appreciate.

Prefer the darker aspects of the character as opposed to the commonly presented image of old. If you don't know what I mean just check out the batman gifs that float around the net. Like the one of him sprinting with a giant bomb.

Oh and shark repellent spray..... Less cheese please.
