That's us.

- I'm sitting in my room
- My flat mates (two) are also sitting in their rooms
- We are all within a 3m radius of each other
- It's 1:30 in the morning
- Our doors are all open
- All 3 of us are on Facebook
- I'm streaming music, one of the others is streaming TV
- And we're talking to each other via an instant messenger rather than sitting in the same room and talking face-to-face.

I can actually hear them typing, then a second later the message arrives.

What is the world coming to?

I don't think something so drastic would happen in only a few thousand years.

Why would you get up and talk to them when you can easily type a couple of words and press enter.

No need to get up, Typing those word or saying em is about the same time...and well...Nothing beat talking to someone face to face...The net is great for when there is a great distance.

We use skype at work.  When people are on the phone and there is office chatter it's the easiest way to communicate without being rude and making sure the people are getting the message.  Plus through IM you can carry on conversations with multiple people at once.  I really don't see the big deal.

I think this is liq's way of telling us that he has friends.

It's all part of some large plot to turn us into drooling zombies.

It is shocking to me that in this age of information so many are so apathetic and the machine can keep feeding disinformation and lies and have it work. ffs, this whole world is evolving so fast. The youth of today have to make an effort to have a real face to face social life because there is so much offered on the internet. Makes it easier to desenitize them, feed them information and make them dependant on that.

My son is no different; he'd rather spend time on lego.com than watch television. Sometimes when I walk in from a hard days work they don't even look up from the screen. We got rid of cable for a while, but our own boredom brought it back. I personally watch maybe one hour of television a week, but my wife does four hours per day. I myself have lost a lot of sleep to video games and probably a lot of money through not being as productive at work. The amount of productivity lost to the internet is huge.

The loss of personal relationships and finding ways to entertain yourself is unimaginable. Imagine the world of one hundred years ago. Our world is better in some ways, but worse in many others.

eek, your son reminds me of me sometimes (more often than not) I'll get home from school and go straight to the computer/TV and not come out of my room for the rest of the night.  My dad comes home from work and comes to see me and see how my day went and I can barely muster a response longer than a few words while I make myself look like I'm in the middle of a conversation so he can leave I'm fuckin pathetic

I have not even hit my 20s yet, and I have already resolved not to get cable when I have my own place.  I plan to seriously limit my TV intake, maybe just own a TV and an antennae for emergencies.  As it is, I only watch 2.5 hours a week, and even that is needless.  There is no substance to in television anymore.  There is just too much to do to let yourself waste hours a week watching TV!  Learn a instrument, read a book, learn a new skill.  Get another job.  I've always noticed that the most interesting people do not own televisions.  The best way I've heard it described as is a pacifier.  It's like a pacifier for adults.  It's a convenient waste of time that gets you nowhere.  Ok, there are educational shows that can be interesting, but at what price?  Hours, days, months of your life wasted watching commercials and channel surfing.  Now, if my kid had an internet addiction at that age, I would seriously limit it and try to replace it with something else.  You have to do it VERY gradually and replace it with something just as good, or better, or he will waste his youth sitting around in front of a pc.  There's plenty of time for that when you are too old to do anyhting sle, but at his age, that's just sad.
