So I've got this recording of several bands here, some are rock and some are metal. The recording is of varying quality--for most of it, there's a persistent hissing, as I think the recording gain was too high. How do I rectify this? The software I'm using is Audacity.

If you want an audio preview, I'll have to find a site that lets me put it up.

My housemate uses T-RackS for his degree. I've had a little play, and it seems pretty damn good. You'll need to pirate it though.

No, the program is fine. I just need to know what effects to add. I've compressed it and boosted the bass, but that's it so far.

Should be the compressor. But you have tried that.  So I'm stuck. Get different software and try the compressor on it. I only know how to use pro tools.
