I've got a Dell XPS 1530 for classes, would definitely recommend.
I think Winston has it right on this one though; in the sciences and maths you will quickly realize pen and paper are the better option. It's a bitch trying to do the two finger dance to type numbers in correctly, and even then 1/2 of the symbols you need for math you can't type.
Just use your PC and save yourself $1200. That's at least a solid semester of drinking money.

Whatever Lenovo is in your price and size range. About the only decent laptops these days.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
