Windows Programmer needs spec for a Mac Book Pro for Web Development

Ok guys my new job has me working on a Mac. I have less than a week to give them the specs of my new rig (for Web Development).

I don't know the first thing when it comes to a Mac other than they have icons at the bottom of the screen. I've used DOS, Win 3.1, Windows 95-Vista.

The last Mac I used was an Apple IIe

Only requirement really is dual screen while at work and it must be a laptop. I also like the "Dell USB Keyboard" although a Fujitsu keyboard would be nice.

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I don't know if I need to run Windows in a partition to run Outlook or something. Would Ubuntu be best instead of OS X?

The hardware between a Windows laptop and an Apple laptop, is fairly "apples to apples" comparison-wise.

Just like getting mugged, shopping at the Apple store is less about "What do you need?", and more about "How much ya' got?"

If you've got a decent hardware geek around, that knows Mac hardware in particular, get the low-end model. Then order the upgraded memory, processor, and hard drive off newegg. Apple is all about raping the ignorant on the hardware upgrades.

This thread doesn't make any sense.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

So the basic Mac Book Pro

2.4GHz (Mac no longer uses RISC architecture? I use a dual 2.0GHz Dell at work now)
2GB Ram should be fine
120GB Hard drive

Can that thing run a 19" 2nd monitor?

Can I use a USB keyboard or am I forced with the laptop keyboard?

What about a wireless mouse? Touchpads I never liked.

I was just going to be running Zend Studio 6.1 IDE and having 2 monitors is required for ease of development (code on the left, browsers on the right).

The specs for Zend Studio say:

"Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5 x86 or Power (32 bit only)"

What's the current version of Mac OS, 10.5.x I'm assuming?

What about having a Apache run on the same machine? Is that possible?

What exactly is it you want to do, and why exactly do you need a Mac for it?

Most people as you know... use adobe products for web development... Dreamweaver...Flash... Photoshop...Illustrator and they all run the same on PC or Mac...
a few years back Adobe was more widely used on Mac... Now it's really no difference... The Mac OS has some cool features though....

You could also use a program called bootcamp that you can run Windows as a virtual machine in your mac laptop
and have the benefit of using outlook or other windows programs... and also to test websites with Windows and Mac with your 1 mac computer

We run a course where I work teaching just that...

Macs for PC technicians - more hardware and support focused though.

Any specs you need to know, just ask.

Eclipse, Aptana Studio, Zend, Notepad++, Oracle and many more.

Dreamweaver IS good, but there are many other alternatives that are just as good with certain things. For ease of CSS and XHTML coding, DW takes the prize, but for PHP, Perl and the sort, Aptana studio ( for example ) is much more sophisticated than DW.

I use EditPlus.

DW is too over-complicated and annoying imo.

I've tried Aptana for PHP but, the preview takes way too long to refresh, which pretty much eliminates the use of an IDE, and you're stuck with an over-complicated editor.

I use Visual Studio for web and middleware ( biggest drawback not free of course, but I've never had to pay for it). There are tons of community supported frameworks and guidance packages for working with things MVP or MVC patterns.

There are also free community supported IDEs such as SharpDevelop.

For unit testing I use mbUnit and rhino mocks.
