I have an idea for a laser tracking Gnat killer and wonder if anyone knows a particular wattage appropriate to kill Gnats but not harm humans?

Just find the wattage tolerable for a human, and use slightly less than that amount.

Why do you want a laser tracking Gnat killer anyway?

You can do the same damage with handheld torches:

Just don't purposefully aim it at people's eyes and you'll be fine.

Not so much wattage but amperage. At least, humans can survive after a massive amount of wattage.

Actually I was thinking of using a low-wattage laser with micro-step motors with mirrors.

Just spray them with some cleaning materials. There's a stainless steel cleaner called Sheila Shine that kills them basically with just a second of impact. It's fun watching them spiraling downward to their death.

I've been hit in both eyes with a green laser of relatively low power and didn't have any of the symptoms of 'laser burn'. That said, it wasn't cool.

I'd say a 100-200mW laser pointer should work.

How about a machine like those robot vacuums that just rolls around your house and tracks down ants or any other kind of bugs then doses them with poison?

That would be awesome.

Fixed for the more sadistic yet arguably humane method.

Cheaper too.

Mechanical solution as follows. The fan generating the 'sucking' of the air, would also be designed to kill the bugs as it hits the fan.

Yeah, I think I'm totally overthinking this.  It'll be like a Vacuuswatter or Flyumme or something like that.

My original thought was just to have it automated, but I guess if you had a continuously gentle 'sucking' fan it wouldn't cause too much distraction...especially if it was lighted so it filled two purposes.

No if the bugs have a few minutes to live they can spread the poison to the other bugs.

And leave poisoned dead bugs all over the house while having to buy poison refills for each use/10 uses or w/e.

I'll take a machine that sucks them up and kills them at the same time and that has a removable, easily cleanable area where the dead bug parts end up. More practical imo.

Hmm you could charge people for expensive poison refills, that makes sense. My method would kill the most bugs though. We could also then make another robot to clean up after the poison robot.

How many bugs do you see on average, in your house, each day? Spoiler (highlight to read):
I live in a remote area of Australia, and will see up to or in excess of 200+ bugs in a day or more easily in the vicinity of my house. I regularly poison ant colonies on the property I live on to try clear them out, isn't working.

Trust me, there is no actual practical solution to this, but yours is very far of the mark imo as far as a bug killing device goes. Besides, the first idea was best.
