I know, I know, it's the launcher, not Half-Life 2.

However, I grabbed the hard copy of this game rather than buying it through Steam, but was only able to 'add a shortcut' to Steam, so no automatic updates. Is there any way to implement this game (and others that are available through the store) into my account database? No, it doesn't have a cd-key.

One of my biggest problems with steam. Wish they all worked like Empires: TW...

Then again I've heard that caused a few headaches.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

Some companies pay extra to allow you that. A few games have it like prey and lost planet. Not much else.

This might be a stupid suggestions since you most likely alread tried it, but isn´t there a button in steam saying "add a non-steam app" or something like that? Can´t look right now, cause steam fails at connecting...

He did that, all it allows you to do is launch the game.  For the most part only valve games (maybe a few others) can be added to your account if you buy hard copies.

Clicked the first time on the button yesterday once steam connected again. I thought they keep games up to date too they distribute through steam. One more reason to stick with my hardcopies.

they keep them up to date if you buy them through steam, which to me is one more reason not to buy hard copies.

So they auto-update, if you bought it through steam, but if you bought the same game as hard copy they don´t? That´s ridiculous.

Not really, if you bought the game from steam then they made money off of it and as a service for your business they will auto update it.  If you buy a hard copy (of most games they offer) Steam had nothing to do with the purchase and has no obligation to update it for you IMO.  Yeah It would be nice if they did but they are a business and the concept behind business is profit.
