A friend of a man who pleaded guilty in London to stealing lead from the roofs of buildings said the culprit used Google Earth to identify his targets.
Tom Berge, 27, who was arrested in February, was sentenced to an eight-month suspended jail term and 100 hours of community service after pleading guilty to theft, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.
Berge admitted to stealing valuable lead from the roofs of schools, churches, museums and other buildings.
A friend of Berge said the thief would choose his targets by browsing the tops of buildings on Google Earth.
"He sat at home and scoured south London for targets with just a few clicks of the mouse," the friend said. "He homed in on all sorts of buildings -- many of them listed. He could tell the lead roofs apart on Google Earth as they were slightly darker than normal."
