They won't ask your ID, but there are some rules in Rome, if you are coming to Rome.
So you cannot drink out side in the streets with glass cups from pubs or clubs from 2 oclock night, and you have to drink inside from 2 oclock.
If you carry around a bottle of Whiskey or something like taht around the street a Carabinieri or Polizia will stop sometimes, and will ask you your age and documents, say you are 18. The majority of the time the police won't care, so welcome to Italy.

Your US driver license isn't worth much in Europe, use your passport but I doubt anyone will ask you for ID if you look like a guy that are able to grow a mustache ... Italy, France and Germany in particular is quite liberal when it comes to serving alcohol ... even the kids drink wine for dinnerxBlackPantherx wrote:
What I need to know if what forms of identification can you use in a foreign country for alcohol etc. Specifically Italy. Can I simply use my driver's license from the US or do I use my passport ID card (not the actual passport) or what?
And have a nice trip to Italy, I love that country ... been there several times and brought my family the last two years for summer break and will definately go back again

Might have looked 18 at a push, it was at some chinky 24/h deli though. And the accents might have confused them, i was with a londoner and a scouser.Phatmatt wrote:

Does the liberalism apply towards smoking as well?

I didn't even bother trying to get served before I was 18. Just was like "hey mum/dad can you buy me a case a beer/bottle of vodka next time you go shopping" and they were like "yep sure, what brand??"FatherTed wrote:

but in most restaurants/pubs/bars smoking is not allowed, but either there are tables outside or there are specific rooms where you can smoke. But again this being italy, there are people who smoke in the subway or even in the bus.Ultrafunkula wrote:

The legal drinking age in Wisconsin used to be 18 until they changed it to 21 like every other state.
