We're going to be alright.. http://tr.im/hvSE

PSADENA, Calif. - A small asteroid will fly past Earth early tomorrow morning (Wed., March 18). The asteroid, 2009 FH, is about 50 feet (15 meters) wide. Its closest approach to Earth will occur at 5:17 a.m. PDT (8:17 a.m. EDT, 12:17 UTC) at an altitude of about 49,000 miles (79,000 kilometers).

"This asteroid flyby will be a good viewing opportunity for both professional and amateur astronomers," said Don Yeomans of the Near-Earth Object Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "The asteroid poses no risk of impact to Earth now or for the foreseeable future."

NASA detects and tracks asteroids and comets passing close to Earth. The Near Earth Object Observation Program, commonly called "Spaceguard," plots the orbits of these objects to determine if any could be potentially hazardous to our planet.

15 meters? That wouldn't do much, it wouldn't even be that if it managed to get through the thick parts of the real atmosphere

I dunno actually, how much would this rock be in terms of kiloton yield equivalence if it were to hit the earth?

Dam I missed it, and I was up too. Well maybe I'll catch next time around. I was watching a show about Apophis the other day. It's still got a ways to go but apparently will be kinda hard to miss

Isn't this from the Simpsons episode where bart does this and skinner makes him wake up at 5 AM to go at school and watch the sky and then he discovers a comet on route to Springfield?

Unfunny coincidence is unfunny.

It is the speed my brutha... This was smaller than a bus and hit with the energy of 10 and 15 megatons. Remember it's size, composition, velocity, and density.

Yeah I know, I was just wondering how much of an impact a 15m would make . I thought one of yous guys could just throw up a nuclear equivalent, you don't think I know about the various factors involved Kez

Well Wikipedia says 10m gives 20Kt, but then if it's an airburst it makes it worse......I dunno. Basically just make sure it doesn't hit a city if it survives the initial re-entry bit

It did that on my work pc.. played the same exact video in my laptop sitting right next to it with no stutter. It's probably a processing thang.

If an asteroid ever was going to hit Earth that was extremely large (not as large as the on in Kmar's video, you'd be fucked no matter what with that) I'd probably just go to the center of it so my death would be as quick as possible. From what I've heard in documentaries, your chances of survival are incredibly low and even if you do survive, you'll probably die of suffocation soon from all the ash anyway.

I know, it's quite pleasant to look at, isn't it?

But yeah I know what you're talking about. It's pretty much inevitable, isn't it?

Pretty much. The moon itself was most likely formed from a large collision.

Fuck you guys, damn pessimists, we have enough nukes to destroy half the planet, surely we have enough to push the moon out of orbit.

We have enough to decimate the surface of our planet.. nothing near actually vaporizing it.
