ok, before i begin here are my system specs

Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3 iP35 mobo
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
4GB OCZ Platinum DDR2 800MHz
Gainward 4850 512MB DDR3
500GB  samsung spinpoint HDD + Maxtor maxline II 250GB HDD
Hp dvd-rw drive
620W coolermaster Realpower modular PSU
Vista Home Premium 64 bit/windows 7 beta/ubuntu 8.10
HP vs17e monitor @ 1280x1024

ok, i had before my 4850 a Zotac 8800GT 512mb, it was a beast of a card. i traded it with the gainward 4850. Seems a fair deal.

I have been playing games like counterstrike and have been getting lags with everything on max. Before i would get over 100FPS with everything maxed, now its only about 80 with lag. Also on Crysis, on the 8800GT i would get 25FPS on everything V.H but with the 4850 its 22 and lower in some cases. GTA4 i would get 30FPS on high settings now its only 22 with the 4850.

why is the 4850 performing shitter than my previous 8800GT???

i doubt its  a driver issue as i removed them properly and installed the latest ati drivers. i also get no artefacts in game

here is a screen shot

NOTE: the person i got it from said he flashed the card with the asus bios to overclock more easily.

I would agree that they BIOS flash may have hosed the card.  However, it doesn't help that you are playing with such a low resolution.  A card of that power isn't really going to start flexing it muscle until at least 1600x1200...with a few noted game exceptions.

Lol? It's going to perform better at lower resolutions than at higher ones.

Unless you meant it will only outperform the 8800GT at higher resolutions.

did you never stop and think why someone was happy to trade a 4850 for a 8800?

The difference between cards is slimmer at lower resolutions, and some more powerful cards might actually perform slightly worse than their weaker counterparts, d. Not this much, though.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Not necessarily. The CPU is used more at lower resolutions. At like 1024x768, the CPU is going to be used a lot and will bottleneck the video card. Same for 1280x1024. You see this until at least 1600x1200/1680x1050 or higher.

i doubt it, i see no artifacts in game. is there a way of testing if a card has any issues???

it was a 8800GT plus £10, both 8800GT and 4850 were boxed, i then got a PSP off him for a smaller price at £50 with box/case/6 umd's before of the extra tenner

I wouldn't bother with 3DM06.  Raise that resolution if possible (borrow a monitor that's at least 1680x1050, i would look for even higher), and do some more testing.  Catalyst 9.3 is the latest driver btw.  But they don't change anything over 9.2 except Lost Planet: Colonies or some shit like that.

If your CPU is at stock speeds, I'd say probably 12-15K. Just a guess.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
Just had to.

And rammuntion: ATITool has a nice artifact scanning utility. FurMark is good for stability testing. 3DMark06 is a good measure of performance.

I have a 4850 in a old Dell XPS3 with a P4 3.6 HT. Would making the res 1280x1024 or even 1600x1200 from 1024x768 help it play PR better? Probably the processor holding the card back anyway.

Upping res doesn't take load off the CPU, it merely changes the CPU load:GPU load ratio; CPU load increases too when upping the res.

Thanks Freezer. Was hoping for a little boost in performance from the old girl.
