A few people asked me to make some posters (ill be using GIMP), what resolution would be optimal?

This is assuming they just want to print it on a standard piece of paper.

standard printers need a half centimeter margin or so, keep that in mind

I'm no expert in this field, but wouldn't the DPI of your printer determine the resolution of the image?

If you're talking DPI then 300-400 is good for printing.
